Hikaru Shida (C) vs. AbadonSamoa Joe (C) vs. Rhett TitusMJF (C) vs. Kenny Omega
It’s main event time!
Backstage, we see split-screen footage of AEW World Champion MJF bouncing up-and-down in his ring gear on one side, and the challenger Kenny Omega doing the same on the other. Up walks Samoa Joe to confront MJF about his offer to him. He tells him if he finds himself in a bad way tonight, just scream Samoa Joe’s name and he’ll be his friend.
Tony Schiavone mentions our main event for the AEW World Championship is up next on Collision. On that note, we head to another commercial break. When we return, Kenny Omega’s theme hits and out comes “The Cleaner” in a big ring coat, part of which falls off when he steps through the ropes.
His theme cuts off and then we hear the familiar sounds of MJF’s entrance tune. Out comes the reigning and defending AEW World Champion to a huge pop from the Uncasville crowd. Tony Schiavone mentions it being 343 days that MJF has been champion, with him quickly approaching Omega’s record of 344 days.
The champion and the challenger are in the ring as Jim Ross joins Tony Schiavone and Nigel McGuinness on the call for this headline bout. Dasha Gonzalez handles the formal pre-match ring introductions for MJF and Omega and then we get ready to start our highly-anticipated main event title tilt with the all-time longest running AEW World Championship record at stake.
We see some good back-and-forth action in front of a super hot crowd and then MJF starts to pull ahead into the offensive lead. So much so that at one point he confidently walks on Omega’s back to steps over him and strut. After he slips, MJF plays to the crowd. He then extends his hand to Omega and loudly yells, “Sportsmanship,” before leading the fans in a “Sportsmanship!” chant.
The two shake hands and MJF looks sincere but then sneaks in a cheap shot and throws his hands up like Muhammad Ali celebrating a boxing victory in his prime. Omega ends up back-body-dropping “The Devil” over the top-rope and out to the floor, where he hits a running flipping splash onto the AEW Champion for an enormous pop.
Back in the ring, MJF leaps over the top for a back flip and splashes onto Omega with ease. He pops up on his feet and walks around like it was no big deal as fans loudly chant “Holy sh*t!” Back in the ring, MJF goes to spike Omega with a pile driver through the ropes but Omega shoves him away and comes off the top-rope with a flying body press. Jim Ross points out MJF’s knee looks weakened.
MJF catches Omega leaping at him and brings him down over his knee with a vicious back-breaker. He goes for the follow-up cover, but “The Cleaner” kicks out before the count of three to keep this one alive. MJF has Omega in a side head-lock, which he muscles Omega up while holding onto before bringing him down on the top of his dome with a modified DDT for a close near fall attempt.
Omega hits a snap-dragon suplex on MJF that drops the champ right on the back of his head. Ouch. The fans chant “Kenny! Kenny!” as The Elite leader recovers and starts to take back over on offense. After several more minutes of hard-hitting back-and-forth action, we see both guys down and out with the referee counting. They both get up, but MJF is the fresher of the two.
A table is set up like a bridge across the ring apron and the floor and MJF is beating down Omega in front of it. Omega fights back and tries hooking MJF for a snap dragon suplex, and he hits it on him on the hard part of the ring apron. Tony Schiavone shouts that Omega broke MJF’s neck. The fans chant “Holy sh*t!” That looked brutal.
Omega follows up with a sit-out power bomb that puts MJF through the table and then we head into another mid-match commercial break as this violent spectacle of a main event title match continues. When we return, we see both guys on spaghetti legs trading shots in the middle of the ring back-and-forth. A thumb to the eyes of Omega helps MJF take over.
Omega lands a running knee off the ropes but then MJF hits a poisonrana to avoid a One Winged Angel. Omega quickly answers back with a wild poisonrana of his own. The crowd goes wild as both guys are down and out once again. A loud “Fight forever! Fight forever!” chant spreads throughout Mohegan Sun Arena. Omega seems to have MJF finishes off but he gets his foot on the ropes to keep this one going.
After the pin attempt fails to finish this one off, we see Omega punching the mat like Shawn Porter after being knocked down by Terrance Crawford. On that note, we shift gears and head into our final mid-match commercial break of the evening. The conclusion of this Match of the Year candidate main event concludes next.
As we settle back in from our final commercial time out of the evening, we see Omega hoist up MJF in the power bomb position on the floor and simply hurl him forward where he crashes back-first into the ring barricade. We see Omega take the protective cover off the barricade but the referee stops him before he can do anything else. He rolls MJF back in the ring and climbs to the top-rope.
MJF pops up and hits the ropes to crotch Omega in the corner. MJF climbs up on Omega in the corner but Omega makes him pay for it. He hits a snap-dragon suplex on the champ and goes for the cover, but MJF again kicks out. Omega waits for MJF to get up and when he does, he blasts him with a V-Trigger. And a second one. He goes for a One-Winged Angel but he sees Don Callis running down the ramp so he lets MJF go.
We see MJF try and roll up Omega from behind while he is distracted by Callis, but Omega kicks out. He rolls MJF up, but MJF kicks out. The ref ejects Don Callis from the ringside area. Omega hoists MJF up for the One Winged Angel again but MJF forward-rolls into a pin attempt. Omega counters and goes for the cover but MJF kicks out. MJF hits the heat-seeker on Omega through the ropes and covers him, but Omega kicks out.
“The Devil” hops on the middle rope and yells, “This one is for you Adam!” then he tries to do Adam Cole’s Panama Sunrise but Omega avoids it. He goes for it again moments later and this time he connects with it. He follows up with another heat-seeker on Omega through the ropes. He goes for the cover and this time he picks up the pin fall victory. With the win, MJF retains the AEW Championship and will now become the longest-reigning AEW World Champion of all-time. Epic main event.
Winner and STILL AEW World Champion: MJF
