Tommy Dreamer Questions Booking of Jacob Fatu’s WWE SmackDown Return – Tommy Dreamer has voiced concerns about how Jacob Fatu’s surprise return was handled on WWE SmackDown in Berlin, questioning whether the angle ultimately benefits Fatu in the long run.
Fatu made his shocking return during the Three Stages of Hell main event between Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre. He had been absent from WWE television since October after a mysterious backstage attack wrote him off programming. His reappearance came during the decisive fall of the match, which took place inside a steel cage.
As Rhodes and McIntyre battled to escape the structure, Fatu suddenly emerged and attacked both competitors. The ensuing chaos allowed McIntyre to slip out through the cage door, securing the victory and capturing the WWE Championship. While the moment was dramatic, Dreamer believes the execution created more confusion than impact.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Dreamer admitted he was not a fan of the finish, particularly in terms of how it framed Fatu’s character. “I did not like the finish at all, because I’m like ‘What does that do for Jacob?’ He reveals himself that it’s Drew McIntyre who attacked him, and he gets a reaction, and the moment he turned on Cody, (the crowd) start booing.”
Dreamer felt the live reaction highlighted a disconnect in the storytelling. “I’m like, ‘So you don’t like Cody throughout the match, but now Jacob – who you like – once he starts beating up Cody, now you’re booing him and cheering for the guy he’s beating up.’”
According to Dreamer, the mixed response undercut what should have been a defining moment for Fatu. “I thought the finish came off a little weird, and I just was like, where does this leave Jacob if this is his big return? If he’s going to be the guy to face Drew, he just screwed over Cody, so he’s not a likeable guy.”
Dreamer also warned about the broader implications for Cody Rhodes’ positioning. “If this is an era where we want to cheer bad, okay, but your worst scenario as a wrestling fan is a bad Cody Rhodes. I’m telling you, I know what he has to be a heel, and what you see as a top guy heel, you ain’t gonna like it.”
With Fatu now back in the mix and McIntyre atop the company, Dreamer’s comments underline potential creative challenges WWE may need to address as this storyline continues.
