David Finlay made a surprising debut in AEW earlier this week, but a new report indicates that WWE had creative plans for the former New Japan Pro-Wrestling star before he ultimately signed with Tony Khan’s promotion.
Finlay appeared during the March 4, 2026 episode of AEW Dynamite. The moment took place after a tag team match featuring Darby Allin and Orange Cassidy against Gabe Kidd and Clark Connors. Following the match, Finlay stormed the ring and attacked both Allin and Cassidy.
After the attack, Finlay stood alongside Kidd and Connors in the ring, signaling the creation of a new faction. The trio later confirmed that the group will move forward under the name “THE DOGS.”
Finlay’s appearance came shortly after his contract with New Japan Pro-Wrestling expired. His quick arrival in AEW raised questions about whether other promotions had shown interest in signing him.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE had internally discussed a potential creative direction for Finlay if he had joined the company.
The report noted that Finlay had interest in working more frequently in the United States. A recent change in his personal life reportedly played a role in that decision.
“He recently had a child and that was said to be part of the reason he wanted to work in the United States, so he could be home so much more and the American groups have a better schedule.”
WWE reportedly had a specific concept in mind that would have positioned Finlay in a leadership role within NXT.
“WWE wanted him to be the leader of the second generation group in NXT with Lexis King, Stacks Lorenzo, Arianna Grace and Uriah Connors (Brogan Finlay, David’s younger brother).”
The idea would have grouped together several second-generation talents. Lexis King is the son of Brian Pillman, while Arianna Grace is the daughter of Santino Marella. Finlay’s younger brother, Brogan Finlay, was also reportedly included in the concept.
Despite those plans being discussed internally, Finlay ultimately chose to debut in AEW. His first appearance ended with him aligning with Gabe Kidd and Clark Connors, forming a new faction that appears set to play a role in upcoming storylines.
With the trio now operating as “THE DOGS,” AEW has introduced a new group that could become a key part of its roster moving forward.
