• On This Day In Pro Wrestling History (July 23, 1989) – NWA The Great American Bash 1989: The Glory Days

On this day in Pro Wrestling history on July 23, 1989, Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling aired ‘NWA The Great American Bash 1989: The Glory Days’ LIVE on PPV from the Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.

This was the 5th edition of WCW’s annual The Great American Bash events, although the 1986 & 1987 Great American Bash events were actually tours of several shows with the best matches making it to the VHS’, that made them being presented like 1 big event in both years, eventho they weren’t.

There was no Great American Bash in 1993 & 1994, but after WCW was sold to the World Wrestling Federation in 2001, Vince McMahon brought the pay-per-view back in 2004 under the WWE banner.

Below are the results from that night:

– The Skyscrapers won a Two Ring King of the Hill Battle Royal

– Brian Pillman defeated Bill Irwin

– The Skyscrapers defeated The Dynamic Dudes

– Tuxedo match: Jim Cornette defeated Paul E. Dangerously

– Texas Tornado match: The Steiner Brothers defeated The Varsity Club

– NWA World Television Championship: Sting (c) wrestled The Great Muta to a draw

– NWA United States Heavyweight Championship: Lex Luger (c) defeated Ricky Steamboat by DQ

– WarGames: The Road Warriors, The Midnight Express & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams defeated The Fabulous Freebirds & The Samoan SWAT Team match

– NWA World Heavyweight Championship: Ric Flair (c) defeated Terry Funk

A SmackDown House Show took place at Ft. Myers, Florida last night and it drew very low attendance. It should be noted that this Live Event was just a few hours away from Tampa, Florida, where the RAW Reunion special took place.

The main event of this show was Kofi Kingston defending the WWE Championship against Dolph Ziggler & Randy Orton in a triple threat match.

Below are some photos of the very low attendance at this event:

It should be noted that these photos were taken just 5 minutes before the show began.
