During the main event, Carmelo Hayes retained his NXT Championship against Wes Lee, but even before the match officially began, it was already a historic occasion.
In fact, this bout marked the first time that two Black men were competing in the main event for the NXT Championship. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the ring announcer, referee, and commentator for the match were all Black individuals, further underlining the historical significance.
Hayes and Lee delivered an intense and captivating match, giving their all in the ring. At one point, Lee came close to securing a victory when he executed the Cardiac Kick, but Hayes managed to escape the ring. Ultimately, Lee attempted a high-risk move, diving to the outside, but he crashed into the barricade instead. Struggling, he barely made it back into the ring, where Hayes capitalized and pinned him using the “Nothing but Net” move.
Following the match, Carmelo Hayes shared his thoughts. In a special digital segment for NXT, he commended Wes Lee and expressed his pride in being part of this historic moment. Hayes also took to social media, expressing his honor in making history alongside one of the finest talents in the world.
