Backstage Report On When WWE Made The Rock Vs. Roman Reigns Match Official

With the company holding a large press event this coming Thursday, both Meltzer and co-host Bryan Alvarez agreed that the company likely needed to have its plans set in stone by then. While it seems certain that The Rock is wrestling Reigns, it remains possible that Rhodes has some involvement.

“Roman Reigns and Rock are gonna have a match,” Meltzer continued. “Whether Cody ends up inserted into the match and makes it a three-way, that’s a different story. And I don’t know that that will happen, but I don’t know that it won’t happen, because they can still do it. … As of Friday, that was not the plan, but they can always change the plan.”

Meltzer then said that there are people within WWE who believed creating this situation would turn Rhodes into a figure reminiscent of Daniel Bryan — a babyface positioned against the establishment with the full support of fans. However, it’s unclear if WWE was expecting such a negative reaction to Johnson, and Meltzer isn’t sure if WWE even minds the booing, as it just means more attention on the match in the end.

“We’ll see how they try to get out of it, but they’re turning it into an angle,” Meltzer said. “The reaction for Cody, about Cody getting screwed and people getting behind Cody, that was part of the story. That was absolutely expected.”
