Goldberg Addresses Criticism of Being Unsafe

Goldberg Addresses Criticism of Being Unsafe – With his retirement match fast approaching, WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg is once again speaking out about one of the most controversial moments of his wrestling career—the kick at WCW Starrcade 1999 that effectively ended Bret “The Hitman” Hart’s in-ring career.

In a recent interview with Dan Sileo of JAKIB Sports, Goldberg addressed the infamous incident, reiterating that the blow to Hart’s head was unintentional and something he’s carried guilt over for more than two decades.

“I kicked Bret Hart in the head on accident a hundred years ago and I’ve been remorseful ever since,” Goldberg said. “And I’ve said I was sorry. I was young in the business, no question, and people make mistakes.”

The incident has remained a persistent cloud over Goldberg’s legacy, especially as Hart has frequently criticized him in public interviews, labeling him unsafe in the ring. Goldberg, however, remains adamant that there was no malice involved and defended the respect he had—and continues to have—for his peers.

“People have to understand that I was extremely lucky to break into the business when I did,” he said. “There were guys that were unbelievable sources of information, the coaches, and the people who took the time to help me out. I never would take advantage of anybody. Do you think I’m gonna cheapshot people?”

The comments come just weeks ahead of Goldberg’s highly anticipated retirement match against World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER. The bout is scheduled to take place at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12 in Atlanta, Georgia, Goldberg’s hometown. The segment that set up the match aired on the June 16 episode of WWE RAW.

While many fans continue to debate the legacy of Goldberg’s in-ring career, the former WCW icon remains unapologetically direct in owning his past mistake—even as he prepares to close the book on his career in one final match.
