WWE Files Trademark for Classic WCW Event Name ‘SuperBrawl’ – WWE has taken another step in reviving wrestling nostalgia by filing a new trademark for one of WCW’s most iconic event names — SuperBrawl. The filing, made on July 22, has sparked fresh speculation about whether the company plans to bring the event back in some form for future programming.
The trademark covers a wide range of entertainment-related services, including “exhibition of professional wrestling events rendered through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media.” Additionally, it mentions the distribution of wrestling news and information, as well as the operation of a sports entertainment website. This type of language is typical of WWE’s broader event branding and media distribution strategies.
SuperBrawl was a cornerstone of WCW’s pay-per-view calendar, running annually from 1991 through 2001. Over the years, it hosted numerous legendary matches and was often seen as one of WCW’s premiere events alongside Starrcade, Halloween Havoc, and Bash at the Beach.
WWE has a history of dusting off former WCW event names for modern use. Notable examples include WarGames, which was successfully transitioned to the main roster after years in NXT, and The Great American Bash, which remains an annual fixture for NXT. Starrcade has also been used by WWE for live event specials in recent years.
While the trademark filing doesn’t guarantee that SuperBrawl will be revived as a premium live event, it does indicate WWE’s interest in securing the brand name for future use. Whether the company plans to use it for NXT, a special event, or part of their international tour circuit remains to be seen.
The move continues WWE’s trend of mining wrestling history for branding that resonates with long-time fans, particularly as nostalgia remains a strong marketing tool. With Halloween Havoc and Bash at the Beach already finding new life in today’s WWE ecosystem, SuperBrawl could very well be the next legacy event to return to the spotlight.
