Tony Khan on Why AEW Women’s Tag Belts Are on Hold – AEW President Tony Khan has revealed that the company already has physical AEW Women’s Tag Team Championship belts created, but their official introduction is on hold due to a string of injuries that have significantly impacted the division.
During an interview with Iridian Fierro of WGN Radio, Khan was asked about the possibility of launching Women’s Tag Team Titles. He confirmed that he does want to introduce them but made it clear that timing and roster health are key factors.
“I have a bunch of people I would like to get involved in a women’s tag team tournament, potentially,” Khan said. “There has been so much injury in the women’s division. And as the person who put together the Women’s Casino Gauntlet, I wish that we had come out of it healthier. A quarter of the people in the match got knocked out of the match and out of action indefinitely. So we had one match where I lost 25% of the roster in one match.”
Khan explained that his vision for AEW’s women’s division includes a full roster competing not only for the AEW Women’s World Championship and the TBS Championship but also for future tag team titles. “I would really like to have just mentioning people on the women’s roster. Not all necessarily for the tag team tournament, but to have a full roster competing for the Women’s World Championship, the TBS Championship, and potentially Tag Team Championships, because I would like to do AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championships,” he said.
He then made a surprising revelation: the belts are already made.
“I have the belts. I’ve made the belts. They exist, but I will put them into play when we are able to put the very best full roster forward to have great action with competition for all the championships.”
The AEW women’s division has seen a wave of injuries in 2025, including several names who competed in the Women’s Casino Gauntlet match, further complicating any plans to add a new title to the landscape. With stars like Jamie Hayter, Thunder Rosa, and Kris Statlander all having dealt with injuries in recent months, Khan appears to be exercising caution before expanding the championship scene.
While no official date has been announced for the launch of the AEW Women’s Tag Team Titles, Khan’s comments make it clear that the idea isn’t just conceptual—it’s physically real and waiting for the right time.
