Update on Zack Ryder’s WWE Return, Merchandise Deal in Place – As noted, Zack Ryder (Matt Cardona) made headlines with his surprise in-ring return on the November 14 edition of WWE SmackDown, entering the Last Time Is Now Tournament against LA Knight. While Ryder delivered a strong performance, he ultimately fell short of advancing in the bracket. His return sparked major online buzz due to his history with WWE and his popularity as a character, but new reports clarify the nature of his comeback.
According to Fightful Select, both WWE and Cardona confirmed that his SmackDown appearance was a single booking rather than the start of a full-time return. No standard talent contract is currently in place. However, a merchandise agreement has been finalized, with new Zack Ryder-branded items released online immediately after SmackDown aired. While merchandise activity often signals deeper collaboration, in this case it does not appear tied to a permanent roster spot.
Cardona remains active outside WWE, appearing at the TNA Wrestling television tapings at Full Sail University in Florida the following day. He also engaged with TNA’s social media, writing “I’ll be there!”—further evidence of his ongoing work beyond WWE.
Following his SmackDown match, Ryder addressed fans in a WWE YouTube video: “This might be a one time shot, I might get the call tomorrow, but it doesn’t matter because I’m Zack Ryder and I’m always ready. And I guess I can say this: Woo woo woo, you know it.”
LA Knight added his own words: “I don’t know if this is a welcome back or if this is a see you later but all I can say is, Yeah!”
For now, Ryder’s WWE return remains a memorable one-off, with his future still wide open.
