Backstage News on John Cena’s WWE Backlash Appearance

John Cena is set to appear at WWE Backlash on May 9, and new backstage details clarify why he is scheduled for the event.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Cena’s presence at Backlash is tied directly to his current WWE contract, which includes a set number of appearances.

John Cena Backlash Role Still Unclear

Meltzer confirmed that Cena is booked for the show but noted that his exact role has not been finalized.

“The situation there is that he’s on Backlash. I’m not sure what the role will be because he said he’s never gonna wrestle again. They signed him to a contract that called for a number of appearances, so this is one of those appearances. His deal called for these things,” Meltzer said.

Cena has stated he will not return to in-ring competition, making it likely that his involvement will come in a non-wrestling capacity, possibly announcing some future events.

Contract Obligations Behind Appearance

The report indicates that Cena’s return is not a one-off decision but part of a broader agreement with WWE. His deal includes multiple appearances following WrestleMania 42, and Backlash is one of those scheduled dates.

Meltzer also questioned the timing of the appearance, given how recently Cena was featured at WrestleMania.

“I mean, to me it’s kinda weird because he just did WrestleMania and it was supposed to be something special. And here we are a couple of weeks after WrestleMania and he’s doing it again. So it feels like for a big guest like that coming back so quick and having him again, kinda seems like why would you do it? But I think the mentality is that John Cena is important and getting him on TV is important. He’s signed for a number of dates, so that’s one of them. That’s it,” Meltzer added.

Recent WWE Appearances

Cena last appeared during WrestleMania 42, where he hosted both nights of the event at Allegiant Stadium. Those appearances marked his first WWE television involvement since stepping away from in-ring competition in December.

Backlash will take place at Amalie Arena, with Cena now confirmed to be part of the show in some capacity.

For now, his role remains undefined, but his presence is officially part of WWE’s plans for the event.
