According to WrestleVotes, several members of WWE’s creative team pushed back against the heavy use of the Gingerbread Man gimmick throughout the SmackDown storyline.

A source close to the creative process reportedly described the angle as “hokey and archaic,” with significant disagreement internally regarding the direction of the program.

The Gingerbread Man character was introduced on WWE SmackDown as part of the friendship storyline between Trick Williams and rapper Lil Yachty.

The angle eventually became one of the more polarizing parts of the program after Zayn’s character attacked and effectively “killed off” the Gingerbread Man during SmackDown.

The segment drew mixed reactions from fans online and, according to the report, also divided opinion backstage within WWE.

Zayn recently addressed his evolving character direction during an interview with The Toronto Sun and explained that he does not view his current role as a full heel turn.

“I’ll disagree with your statement that I fully turned heel here. I don’t think I have.”

He explained that the idea behind the character adjustment was to create something more nuanced and less traditional.

“I think I’m trying to play this one a little different because this one is kind of different. We’re kind of riding these reactions, which are different week to week.”

Zayn admitted the storyline has not always unfolded exactly the way he originally imagined.

“Sometimes things just don’t work out exactly how you envision it, and sometimes you think you’re gonna be somewhere on the timeline and you’re not.”

He also acknowledged that the Gingerbread Man attack was always likely to generate backlash from viewers.

“Although to be fair, if you kick a mannequin Gingerbread Man below the belt, that might upset people because people want to have fun.”

Despite the mixed reactions, WWE has continued leaning into the unusual storyline as part of Zayn’s ongoing character evolution on SmackDown.
