Backstage Update on Drew McIntyre’s WrestleMania 42 Plans – New shocking reports have revealed a major change for the Undisputed WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 42. The current internal plan is for Randy Orton to face Cody Rhodes at the big event. This direction became clear after Orton won the Men’s Elimination Chamber match to earn a title shot. Meanwhile, Rhodes is set to challenge the current champion, Drew McIntyre, on this week’s episode of SmackDown.
According to Bodyslam.net, talk of switching to Orton vs. Rhodes began around the start of February. The choice was reportedly made to “shake things up” for the WrestleMania season. It also offers a final payoff to the many teases between the two former Legacy teammates over the last few years. Despite the long-term planning for the season, both Rhodes and McIntyre reportedly did not find out about the official change until last week.
With the title picture moving in a new direction, the current creative plan for Drew McIntyre seems to be a match against Jacob Fatu at WrestleMania. This match comes at an important time for McIntyre, who is scheduled to start filming the Highlander reboot right after the event ends.
There has also been some talk that McIntyre could be added back into the title match to make it a triple threat. Other rumors mentioned a possible match with General Manager Adam Pearce, but the match against Fatu remains the main plan inside the company.
As WrestleMania 42 draws closer on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium, all eyes are on SmackDown to see if Cody Rhodes can capture the gold and lock in his match with “The Viper.”
