Backstage Update on Plans for Top Matches at WrestleMania 42

Backstage Update on Plans for Top Matches at WrestleMania 42 – Seth Rollins’ road back to the ring remains uncertain — and that uncertainty could have major implications for WWE’s plans heading into WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas.

Speaking on Mohr Stories with Jay Mohr, the former World Heavyweight Champion offered a candid update on his recovery from shoulder surgery. Rollins revealed that he still has “another three or four months” before his shoulder is healed enough for a potential in‑ring return. That timeline places his WrestleMania availability firmly in doubt.

According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE sources still consider Rollins a possibility for WrestleMania 42 — but nothing is guaranteed. Meltzer noted that the original internal plan called for Rollins to face Roman Reigns in a WrestleMania main event. However, if the match happens at all, it is no longer expected to be for a championship.

As Meltzer put it, plans at the top of the card can shift quickly.

He also reported that WWE’s creative direction appears to be moving toward a different marquee matchup: Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns, which is once again gaining internal momentum for the premium live event.

This update aligns with Rollins’ own comments from last November, when he told Bert Kreischer on Something’s Burning that his WrestleMania status was simply “TBD.”

WrestleMania 42 will take place on April 18 and 19, 2026, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Whether Rollins plays any role on the show will depend entirely on how smoothly the final phase of his recovery progresses — and whether WWE feels confident enough to lock him into a major storyline before he’s fully cleared.

For now, Rollins remains one of the biggest question marks on the road to WrestleMania.
