Drew McIntyre Defeated Brock Lesnar At WrestleMania 36 Because Of Released Wrestler’s Injury

• On This Day In Pro Wrestling History (May 4, 2002) – WWF Insurrextion 2002

On this day in Pro Wrestling history on May 4, 2002, the World Wrestling Federation aired ‘Insurrextion 2002’ LIVE on PPV from the Wembley Arena in London, England.

This was the 3rd out of 4 annual Insurrextion pay-per-views the WWF/WWE held between 2000 and 2003.

It’s also remembered as the very last televised WWF event, because the company changed its name from World Wrestling Federation to World Wrestling Entertainment the next day, so the Monday Night RAW episode two days after Insurrextion was already promoted under the WWE banner.

Here are the PPV results:

– WWF Intercontinental Championship: Rob Van Dam defeated Eddie Guerrero (c) by DQ

– Jacqueline & Trish Stratus defeated Jazz & Molly Holly

– X-Pac defeated Bradshaw

– WWF Hardcore Championship: Booker T defeated Steven Richards (c)

– The Hardy Boyz defeated Brock Lesnar & Shawn Stasiak

– WWF European Championship: Spike Dudley (c) defeated William Regal

– Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated Big Show

– Triple H defeated The Undertaker

• Drew McIntyre Defeated Brock Lesnar At WrestleMania 36 Because Of Released Wrestler’s Injury

As seen in the main event of Night 2 of WrestleMania 36, Drew McIntyre defeated Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Championship.

However, that wasn’t the original plan.

According to Tom Colohue, WWE officials were planning to give former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez another match against Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship, this time in the main event of WrestleMania.

However, Cain’s injury prevented that match from happening, and Drew McIntyre replaced him and “The Chosen One” finally ended up getting his big moment (unfortunately it happened in front of zero fans in attendance).

Cain Velasquez was recently released from WWE due to budget cuts.
