Inside WWE Gorilla Position: Chaos, Control, and the Voices Behind the Show – WWE’s new docuseries WWE: Unreal premiered Tuesday on Netflix, offering fans a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the company’s creative engine. One standout segment from the debut episode, titled “New Era,” focused on the Gorilla Position—WWE’s production nerve center located directly behind the entrance stage.
Named in honor of WWE Hall of Famer Gorilla Monsoon, the Gorilla Position is where the real-time direction of live shows happens. Bruce Prichard, WWE’s Executive Director, described it as “very unique,” explaining that while the setup is customized for each arena, the internal workflow remains consistent across events.
According to WWE Senior Vice President of Creative Writing Ed Koskey, the area consists of three main tables. “At one table you have Triple H and Bruce Prichard,” Koskey noted. “Another table is where Billy Kidman sits—he’s responsible for timing out the show—and next to him is the respective match producer.”
Koskey emphasized that nearly every producer at WWE is a former wrestler, including names like Chris Park (better known to fans as Abyss), Bobby Roode, and Michael Hayes. These producers act as liaisons between the talent in the ring and the creative leaders behind the scenes.
Park detailed his responsibilities, which include maintaining direct communication with the production truck and staying roughly 15 seconds ahead of the live broadcast to ensure accurate camera work. “I’m also talking to the referees during the matches,” he added.
That communication is a key part of every match. WWE referee Daphanie LaShaunn described the Gorilla Position as a constant source of real-time direction during her matches. “The fans see just two wrestlers in the ring,” she said. “But in my earpiece, I’m hearing at least five different voices giving instructions.”
Episode 1 of WWE: Unreal provides a complete breakdown of how WWE’s Gorilla Position operates—and reveals just how much coordination it takes to keep a live show running smoothly from moment to moment.
