John Cena Comments on Potential Third Match with The Rock – As John Cena continues his farewell run in WWE, many fans have wondered whether his retirement tour might include one final clash with The Rock. The two icons famously split victories at WrestleMania 28 and 29, leaving the door open for a potential rubber match. However, Cena recently explained that while the idea is intriguing, it’s not something he’s pursuing.
During a panel appearance at FAN EXPO Denver, Cena addressed the buzz surrounding a possible third encounter with The Rock. He acknowledged that the matchup is something fans enjoy fantasizing about but stressed that fantasy booking isn’t how he approaches his work in WWE.
“Gosh, fantasy booking. For those who are not inside baseball, fantasy booking is when you take an idea in your head and you’re like, man, it would be cool if… That’s what I’m hearing here. Man, it would be cool if John Cena could fight The Rock one more time. That, to me, that would be cool,” Cena said.
Cena added that he’s built his career by staying grounded and focusing on the tasks given to him by WWE. “I’ve survived and kept a level head over 25 years in the WWE by not setting expectations, by showing up every single day, doing what I’m told and asked to do it to the best of my ability.”
When it comes to creative input, Cena clarified that while he doesn’t pick his opponents, he does value the freedom to help shape the narrative of his matches. “Where I ask for freedom, where I ask for creative expression is not in the selection of my opponent. It is in the process of how we put forth the work to you guys. That way I can be accountable for all my failures.”
He didn’t shy away from mentioning controversial moments in his career, including the Nexus storyline. “You guys say I buried the Nexus. I got to shoulder that cross forever because that’s me. But there are some wins along the way.”
Cena closed his thoughts by appreciating WWE’s trust in his creative direction, saying he prefers to work within given plans and then add his personal touch. “What I like to do is get a plan and say, ‘hey, well, can I, as the artist, can I be creative with the plan?’ I’ve earned enough trust that they’ll let me do some stupid stuff, and I appreciate it.”
While a third showdown with The Rock remains possible, it seems Cena is more focused on meaningful storytelling than fantasy matchups. Whether that final battle ever happens will depend more on timing and opportunity than personal ambition.
