Kenny Omega Responds to William Regal’s Warning About High-Risk Wrestling Moves – Former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega has weighed in on recent comments made by William Regal regarding the dangers of high-risk wrestling maneuvers and their long-term consequences.
Regal shared a rare and strongly worded message on social media addressing what he views as an increasingly dangerous trend in modern wrestling. Drawing from personal experience, Regal referenced multiple serious neck injuries he suffered during his career and spoke candidly about the lasting physical toll they have taken on his daily life. He also cited the death of Mitsuharu Misawa as a tragic example of how cumulative neck damage can lead to fatal outcomes, while noting that at least one former AEW World Champion is currently dealing with severe neck issues despite no longer wrestling.
Regal ultimately urged wrestlers to prioritize longevity and quality of life over short-term spectacle, warning that the damage caused by repeated high-risk spots often does not become fully apparent until it is too late.
Omega responded to Regal’s remarks on X with a measured and reflective statement, offering support for the broader message rather than engaging in company-based debate. He wrote, “Regardless of timing or perceived intent, the general message from Mr. Regal remains a positive one. Tribalism, whataboutism, and other ‘isms’ aren’t needed here.”
Omega emphasized how easy it is for wrestlers to overlook long-term risks while chasing performance highs, adding, “Safety often takes a back seat when a wrestler is locked in and actively chasing the dragon. We all sometimes need a voice from afar to tether us back to reality and to tell us that the risks have consequences.” He acknowledged that injuries are inevitable in wrestling, noting that “none of us will walk away unscathed.”
He further stressed that the issue should not be framed as promotion versus promotion, stating, “This isn’t company vs company or wrestler vs wrestler. This is about a general awareness and a knowing that the cost of what we do is directly related to the amount and severity of risk(s) that we take.” Omega also pointed out that wrestlers have different physical limits, using himself and PAC as examples to explain why not every move is suitable for every performer.
Omega concluded by thanking Regal directly, calling the discussion “great food for thought” and cautioning against turning safety into a competitive argument.
In recent days, some fans have connected Regal’s comments to Kyle Fletcher’s straightjacket suplex spot at AEW Worlds End. However, Regal did not reference that moment specifically. While the timing has fueled online discussion, any direct connection remains speculative.
