WWE SmackDown 5/29/2026: 3 Things We Hated & 3 Things We Loved

GUNTHER cut what WWE framed as a heel promo as he and Cody Rhodes finally entered the ring opposite one another for a talking segment. Of course, the issue with WWE framing it as a heel promo is that he didn’t utter a word of untruth and left Rhodes with his red, white, and blue tail tucked between his legs.

GUNTHER went through Rhodes’ career and how, on paper, it may seem as though they are comparable. But Rhodes always had that extra step-up, just one phone call to begin training, another to land his first WWE contract, and presumably another single phone call to secure his return from the land that shall not be named.

They’re not comparable. GUNTHER cut his teeth on the independent circuit around the world before he ever hit international TV. He shed an entire half of him to prove himself worthy of the WWE, even after carving a record-breaking run with the United Kingdom Championship.

Rhodes had always been the unicorn on the independent circuit, the rogue prince exiled from the kingdom that was always going to be his. Even when he didn’t have the name, he was still always Cody Rhodes, and that story was enough to sustain him before getting back to the promised land.

GUNTHER continued to say that Rhodes was not the hero he portrayed himself to be, he was self-absorbed and couldn’t resist the urge to feed his ego. Obviously this is as up to debate as the story allows it to be, but Rhodes has been called egotistical and selfish by Drew McIntyre, Sami Zayn, Gunther, Roman Reigns, Kevin Owens, and Randy Orton, just to name a few.

That’s a lengthy list, and while it added to the promo in itself, it also represents a sore missed opportunity to reveal Rhodes as the villain in this all. Part of what drew me to the promo was both the fact that GUNTHER is a credible prize-fighting challenger with all of the talk to match, legitimately threatening and oozing with the confidence of a proven dynasty, and the potential to explore the content of what was said. Long has there been a call for Rhodes to turn, quashed somewhat by his cementing as the company’s top babyface. But it’s been a while now, and it would be cool to have something different, especially when everything that’s being said lends to it.

All in all, GUNTHER did what you would want a final promo to do. He verbally dressed the champion down in the way a challenger should, and it went a little way to diminishing the nonsensical build to this point.

King and Queen of the Ring Winners Earn Title Shots at WWE SummerSlam

King and Queen of the Ring 2026 Tournaments Begin as WWE Sets SummerSlam Stakes

WWE has officially started the build toward the 2026 King and Queen of the Ring tournaments, with 5/29 SmackDown opening the road to the competition. The tournaments will continue on RAW next week, and the winners will earn world title opportunities at SummerSlam in August.

Following LA Knight last week, another confirmed entrant in the King of the Ring tournament is Trick Williams. He announced his entry during a promo segment in Barcelona aimed at Carmelo Hayes, who has been pushing for another shot at the United States Championship.

The situation escalated when Ricky Saints got involved. Saints interrupted the segment and made it clear he intends to confront Williams after dealing with Hayes. The tension between all three competitors led to chaos, and the match between Williams and Hayes ended in a double countout after continued fighting outside the ring. Despite the chaos, Hayes picked up momentum during the segment after landing the First 48.

On the women’s side, Jacy Jayne officially declared for the Queen of the Ring tournament during a backstage segment that also featured Paige and Nikki Bella. Jayne was shown alongside the rest of Fatal Influence as she confirmed her intent to win the tournament and move into a championship position.

The rest of Fatal Influence also laid out their goals during the same segment. Fallon Henley and Laney Reid stated their focus is on the Women’s Tag Team Titles, while Jayne remains centered on the Queen of the Ring competition.

WWE has structured both tournaments as key pathways to SummerSlam, with the winners earning major title opportunities. The King of the Ring finals are set for June 27 at WWE Night of Champions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, making the tournament one of the central stories heading into the summer.

With RAW and SmackDown now building the brackets, WWE is adding multiple top names early to strengthen the field. More entrants are expected in the coming weeks as the competition develops and the road to SummerSlam becomes clearer.

Blake Monroe Targets Rhea Ripley in SmackDown Vignette Ahead of WWE Push

Blake Monroe Targets Rhea Ripley in SmackDown Vignette Ahead of WWE Push

Blake Monroe has made her intentions clear on WWE SmackDown, signaling that she is aiming for the top of the women’s division, currently led by WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley.

On the May 29, 2026 episode of SmackDown, WWE aired another diary-style vignette for Monroe as part of her ongoing introduction to the main roster. While previous segments focused on establishing her character, this latest video directly addressed the championship picture and Ripley’s status as titleholder.

The vignette showed Monroe writing in a diary while reflecting on several top names in the SmackDown women’s roster, including Ripley, who is scheduled to defend her championship against Jade Cargill at Clash in Italy.

Monroe’s comments focused heavily on Ripley’s presence and personality.

“Dear diary, there are so many fascinating women in that SmackDown locker room. Take for example Rhea Ripley. Such presence, such brutality, such delicious misery wrapped in all that black leather,” Monroe said.

She went on to suggest that Ripley’s intimidating persona may be masking deeper personal struggles, arguing that the champion projects strength while dealing with internal issues.

Monroe then contrasted herself with the champion, stating she does not rely on intimidation to stand out in WWE’s women’s division.

“But I don’t need a fake bravado to make a splash. I turn heads just by showing up. You can run from your fears all you want but you can’t run from me. I’m the stuff of nightmares and I’m dressed as beautiful as a dream,” she added.

She closed the promo with a direct warning aimed at the entire SmackDown roster.

“Don’t get too comfortable, because the Glamour is coming to SmackDown. Yours truly, Blake Monroe.”

The vignette represents Monroe’s strongest statement since her arrival on SmackDown. WWE has gradually introduced her through a series of segments, including her first on-screen interaction on the May 22 episode of SmackDown, where she met Chelsea Green backstage.

Now Monroe appears fully focused on the championship scene, with Ripley positioned as her primary target as her main roster run develops.

Backstage Report On AEW Double Or Nothing Being Toned Down Due To State Commission

AEW Double or Nothing 2026 has been widely regarded as one of the best pay-per-views the company has ever produced, and one thing that has been picked up on by many fans is the distinct lack of blood in the marquee matches. For a show that had a Stadium Stampede match, an “I Quit” match, and a main event that saw Darby Allin jump off the top of the entrance stage, the lack of crimson throughout the night surprised people, but there was a very good reason for this.

Dave Meltzer detailed in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the New York State Athletic Commission outright banned both blading, and crowd brawling for the event. There was some blood on the show as Adam Copeland was busted open during the aforementioned “I Quit” match, but due to that blood being produced hardway, the commission let it slide. They also let the minimal crowd brawling during the Stadium Stampede match slide too, with The Young Bucks in particular getting to fight amongst the fans if only for a brief moment. At the time of writing, no one in AEW has been punished for these moments.

This is a similar situation to what happened back at AEW WrestleDream 2025 which took place in St. Louis, Missouri. That show was headlined by the highly anticipated “I Quit” match between Darby Allin and Jon Moxley, but due to regulations implemented by the Missouri Athletic Commission, no blading or crowd brawling was allowed at that event either, resulting in an almost bloodless main event.

With all that said, Meltzer also noted that Double or Nothing featuring little-to-no blood was one thing he saw fans praising on social media. While Meltzer acknowledged that the company’s various bloodbaths of the past do get over with loyal fans, they can turn some viewers away at times, particularly parents who don’t want their children to watch the shows. The regulations implemented by the NYSAC forced AEW’s hand, but Meltzer believes that eliminated the small percentage of criticism certain shows receive for being too violent.

Jacy Jayne Enters WWE Queen Of The Ring Tournament In SmackDown Backstage Segment

On “WWE SmackDown”, Jacy Jayne became the first woman to declare for the 2026 Queen of the Ring tournament.

Jayne made her “SmackDown” debut alongside the other two members of Fatal Influence after WrestleMania 42. They have set their sights on the top women in the division. The trio interrupted a backstage segment with Cathy Kelley, Paige, and Brie Bella. Jayne declared for the tournament and sent Kelley away. Fallon Henley and Lainey Reed informed the champions that they were coming for the tag titles.

Earlier this week, LA Knight announced that Queen and King of the Ring matches would begin next week. Night of Champions is scheduled for June 27 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The finals have typically been held on that PLE. The winners will get a title shot at SummerSlam. Jade Cargill won the 2025 Queen of the Ring and Cody Rhodes was crowned King of the Ring.
