Shawn Michaels Discusses Challenges Preparing NXT Talent For WWE Main Roster

Shawn Michaels Discusses Challenges Preparing NXT Talent For WWE Main Roster

Shawn Michaels recently spoke about the difficulties involved in developing WWE talent through WWE NXT and preparing performers for the transition to the company’s main roster.

Speaking on What’s Your Story with Stephanie McMahon, Michaels reflected on his move from being an in-ring performer to helping guide WWE’s next generation of talent behind the scenes.

Shawn Michaels discusses WWE NXT development

Michaels explained that coaching talent at NXT involves far more than simply teaching wrestling fundamentals.

“Well, so it was obviously it’s you’ve got the teaching of the business and wrestling and coaching and you know, again, from basics to intermediate to advanced, you know, very structured from a coaching teaching aspect.”

He also noted that one of the biggest things that motivated him in his coaching role was creating a different learning environment than the one many wrestlers experienced in previous generations.

“But the biggest, the part that moved me the most, is the idea that it doesn’t have to be the over the top kind of tough love that we all got.”

Michaels acknowledged that many wrestlers from older eras came up through much harsher systems but suggested the current developmental process does not need to rely on that same approach.

Later in the interview, Michaels discussed one of the major challenges facing WWE developmental — getting inexperienced athletes prepared for the demands of the main roster within a limited timeframe.

“It’s very challenging and look, and that’s one of the things I can remember being asked like ‘how long do you think it takes to get one of these athletes that doesn’t know anything to get them totally ready for the main roster?’”

Michaels admitted he believes properly preparing talent takes significantly longer than many people may expect.

“And I said honestly, to get them ready to what I think is adequate to be ready for a main roster guy,” Michaels said.

He continued by explaining that modern developmental talent simply do not have the same volume of in-ring experience previous generations received before reaching major promotions.

“We have people that, you know, I was, in the hundreds of matches in probably three months.”

Michaels has served as WWE Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative for NXT since becoming heavily involved behind the scenes in 2021.

Under his leadership, NXT has produced numerous wrestlers who later moved to WWE RAW and SmackDown, including several performers currently featured prominently on the main roster.

Backstage News On AEW Dynamite Changes Due To Ted Turner’s Death, Sting’s Appearance

After news broke that Ted Turner had passed on Wednesday, AEW announced that night’s episode on “Dynamite,” which airs on TBS, the network Turner founded, would be dedicated to Turner’s memory. That proved to be accurate, as “Dynamite” opened with a moving tribute to the former WCW owner, with former WCW star Sting and WCW announcer Tony Schiavone each speaking about Turner and his importance to the wrestling business.

The sudden appearance of Sting had many believing that AEW flew in the wrestling legend on short notice in order to pull the tribute off. However, Dave Meltzer would reveal on “Wrestling Observer Radio” that while AEW owner Tony Khan did re-write some of the show in order to include the Turner tribute, Sting was already going to be in the North Charleston, South Carolina area for the show anyway.

“Sting was actually not brought in for this show,” Meltzer said. “Sting was…the plan was for Sting to come in and do promotional work in Charleston because they felt, you know, they’re in the Carolinas and Sting started early in his career working in that territory. So they flew Sting in to do media and stuff. And Sting himself asked when he got there, or even before, he goes ‘I don’t want to be on the show because it’s not my time anymore. I don’t want to take time away from anybody else. I don’t want to be on the show.’

“Then Ted Turner dies, he’s there, and Tony basically rewrites much of the show, because he felt they needed to open the show, and he had changed things around and everything. And he wanted Tony Schiavone and Sting to do the tribute to Ted Turner, which Sting was happy to do. And it was completely unscripted in the sense, and you could tell watching it. Like, they just went out there and they winged it. I thought it was very well done.”

WWE’s Natalya Pays Tribute To Late Star Owen Hart On What Would Be His 61st Birthday

Nearly twenty seven years after his tragic death, wrestling legend Owen Hart continues to be fondly remembered by the wrestling world, and will be honored again by AEW later this year with the annual Owen Hart Cup tournament. And today, on what would’ve been Hart’s 61st birthday, many are taking a moment to remember the “King of Harts,” perhaps none more notable than his niece, WWE star Natalya.

Taking to her Instagram early Thursday afternoon, Natalya posted a tribute to her uncle, complete with a video clip, made by Peter Chao, and a brief message introducing it.

“Happy birthday to the King of Harts, Owen Hart, on his birthday,” Natalya said. “I love being able to celebrate what an incredible person Owen was. He was deeply loved, and the impact he had on people is something that still lives on every single day. Owen’s spirit continues to shine so brightly. I hope you take a moment to watch this and remember Owen Hart today.”

Accompanied by the song “The Dance” by Garth Brooks, the video featured Natalya and her husband, WWE producer TJ Wilson, discussing their memories of Owen and how he had inspired them to continue his legacy by running their own Hart Dungeon in Florida. Clips were also shown of Hart’s legendary career, including moments from his time in New Japan Pro Wrestling, and numerous highlights from his time in WWE, such as his matches with brother Bret Hart and brother-in-law Davey Boy Smith.

Natalya has never been shy about honoring Owen, and had previously paid tribute to him on what would’ve been his 59th birthday two years ago. She has also spoken positively about AEW’s Owen Hart Cup tournament, particularly in how the tournament allows her uncle’s legacy to live on even after his death.
