AEW Dynamite – Spring Breakthru: 3 Things We Loved And 3 We Hated

This feels egregious to write, considering I have been quite adamant in my desire not to see Darby Allin as AEW World Champion. A man who compels me only in his ability to run through literal walls and still not only finish a match, but come out victorious and somehow able to do the next crazy stunt the next week. But also someone that is quite hard to root for, both owing to outside-of-wrestling noise and the very fact that, death-defying stunts aside, he doesn’t exactly come off as a worthy protagonist.

Even still, it has to be said that tonight saw Allin crowned World Champion in such a great way.

From the show kicking off with MJF, having told Renee Paquette on Sunday that he would be ditching social media until he’s called upon again, learning that he will, in fact, be defending the title against Allin.

To the following segment with MJF seeming to weasel his way out of the match, only for Allin to cut a compelling teary-eyed promo about his need to be World Champion, and Bryan Danielson relaying Tony Khan’s decision that MJF would get his wish to have time to prepare – and defend the title in the main event instead.

And finally to the main event of the show as MJF came out completely bricking it on such short notice, trying to rush into a cheating finish only to get c***-blocked himself and dropped five times both in the Scorpion Death and Coffin variety. When all was said and done, Allin won the title in mere minutes.

A man who climbed Mount Everest and planted the company flag on its summit finally reached the company’s own summit. Complete with a Sting pep talk and appearance to embrace the new World Champion as the show went off air. That’s a heck of a story.

Time will tell whether he turns out to be a champion to remember or goes down as a better chaser. But for the time being, taking the night and the moment for what it is, everything was done really well, and it made me, a proclaimed Allin detractor for all that is worth, actively root for and celebrate with Allin.

A special shout-out should be made for the loser on the night, MJF, coming off an exceptional bout with Kenny Omega on Sunday. Without his heel work and organic “What the f***?!” reaction to the whole defending the title ordeal, perhaps nothing about tonight feels as special as it does. He really is one of the best workers to root against, and that was definitely exemplified here.

Sting And Son Make AEW Appearances At Spring Breakthru

Sting’s son, Steven Borden, wrestled a dark show before his father encouraged and joined Darby Allin after winning the AEW World Championship in the main event of “AEW Dynamite Spring Break-Thru.”

Borden has been following in his father’s footsteps by wrestling for AEW, albeit exclusively in dark matches, since the end of last year.

He has yet to suffer a defeat during his time working both singles and tag matches. And he was also in action, per Wrestling Observer’s Jim Valley, on Wednesday night against Lobo Del Desiento, picking up another win.

Hook was also featured ahead of the show, beating Evil Uno before cutting a promo degrading Everett, Washington.

As of yet, Borden has only appeared on AEW TV donning the Wolfpac make-up during his father’s retirement match alongside Allin against the Young Bucks at Revolution 2024.

Sting later appeared on the “AEW Dynamite” broadcast to give a pep talk to Allin ahead of his World Championship challenge against MJF. Allin went on to win the title in minutes and celebrated with his mentor as the show went off air.

Darby Allin Wins AEW World Title In Under 5-Minutes

Darby Allin squashed MJF to win the AEW World Championship in the main event of “AEW Dynamite Spring Break-Thru.”

The match was made to the surprise of MJF during the opening segment of the show, with Renee Paquette informing him fresh off a social media detox since Sunday that he would be defending the title right away.

Tony Khan eventually agreed, via Bryan Danielson on commentary, that it would be unfair for MJF to defend the title on such short notice. So he would be defending the title in the main event instead.

Sting appeared backstage ahead of the match, telling Allin it would be his time going into the match and giving him one last pep talk. Allin appeared anxious even with the words from his mentor.

But what was billed with a 60-minute time limit was over almost as soon as it started, with Allin countering MJF’s attempt at cheating by hitting his own low blow behind the referee. He followed that up with a Scorpion Death Drop and four Coffin Drops before crowning his moment with a throwback to their Full Gear 2021 clash, delivering a side headlock takeover to get the pinfall.

Allin was joined in his celebration by members of the locking room including Kevin Knight, Mike Bailey, the Young Bucks, Brody King, Mascara Dorada, Mistico, the Outrunners, the Conglomeration, Evil Uno, and then finally Sting made his entrance to embrace him as the show went off air.

Allin beat MJF tonight for the first time in AEW on his third attempt, losing the aforementioned match at Full Gear 2021 and falling short alongside Jack Perry and Sammy Guevara at Double or Nothing 2023.

AEW TBS Champion Willow Nightingale Overcomes Kamille

Willow Nightingale is still TBS Champion after she defeated a newly-returned Kamille, injured shoulder and all, during Wednesday’s edition of “AEW Dynamite Spring BreakThru.” Kamille returned to the company at Dynasty on Sunday and she attacked the champion backstage before winning her return match on Zero Hour in quick fashion.

Nightingale took it to her challenger to start off the match, bouncing her face off the turnbuckles numerous times in attempts to get Kamille off her feet. Kamille targeted Nightingale’s injured shoulder throughout the match. The champion finally got Kamille down in the corner and nailed her with a cannonball, but couldn’t get her up for the Babe with the Power Bomb. Kamille almost had Nightingale pinned with a near fall off a face buster into a leg drop.

Kamille got Nightingale into an arm bar to further injure her shoulder, but Nightingale countered and got Kamille’s shoulders to the mat. The champion sent Kamille face-first into the turnbuckle once again, then pinned her off a backslide to retain the TBS Championship.

AEW Women’s World Champion Thekla Called Out For Match On Spring Breakthru Collision

Fresh off of her successful AEW Women’s World Championship defense against Jamie Hayter at the AEW Dynasty pay-per-view on April 12, “The Toxic Spider” Thekla decided to run her mouth once again on the Spring BreakThru edition of “AEW Dynamite.” However, Thekla’s mouth got her trouble when she was challenged to a match 24 hours from now on “AEW Collision.”

Just as Thekla was going to gloat about defeating Hayter at Dynasty, Hayter’s tag team partner in The Brawling Birds, Alex Windsor, interrupted proceedings by cutting a promo of her own. She stated that no one wanted to hear Thekla talk, that she was a champion in her own right as she’s currently the NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion, and the fact that no one calls Thekla one of the greats back in Japan because she was stupid enough to get herself fired from STARDOM.

Thekla fired back by saying even though she did get fired, Japan couldn’t handle anyway, and no one in AEW can handle her either. Windsor decided to put this to the test and challenged Thekla to a match for the AEW Women’s World Championship on the Spring BreakThru edition of “Collision” on April 16. Before Thekla had a chance to accept, the Sisters of Sin came out to attack Windsor, but Windsor got the better of Skye Blue and Julia Hart. She proceeded to try and go into the audience to confront Thekla, but the champion backed away. The match was then made official by AEW President Tony Khan.

Windsor and Thekla have crossed paths previously in tag team matches and trios matches, as well as the women’s Casino Gauntlet match at AEW All In Texas in July 2025. However, the two women have never faced off in a singles match, but that will all change this Thursday on “Collision.”
