AJ Styles Says Modern Wrestling Games Are Too Complicated To Learn

AJ Styles recently shared his thoughts on how modern wrestling video games have evolved, suggesting that the increasing complexity of their control systems can make them difficult for casual players to enjoy.

Speaking on the Phenomenally Retro Podcast alongside co host Tony Giles, Styles reflected on the differences between older arcade style games and the more detailed simulation style titles that dominate the market today. The conversation centered around how modern sports and wrestling games have added layers of controls and mechanics that, while offering depth, can also make the experience overwhelming for some players.

Giles kicked off the discussion by explaining that he has not spent much time with newer wrestling titles and feels the genre has become overly complicated compared to the games he grew up with.

“I haven’t really played a modern wrestling game for a long time now, but this goes the same for when EA were doing Fight Night, UFC, NHL, and NBA. I feel like it got too complicated with the control scheme. There was so much you could do. I preferred it when it was more arcade-style rapid button tapping and trying to pull off certain moves, rather than having to be a wizard using the controller.”

Styles agreed with that viewpoint and recalled how, when playing fighting games backstage with fellow wrestlers, they often avoided certain mechanics entirely because they were too difficult to learn quickly.

“Yeah, it’s always too much. I remember playing UFC with the boys in the locker room. We had no grappling just knockouts. That’s all we could do. If I played, that’s what I wanted to do, because the grappling is definitely much harder to grasp than throwing punches and kicks and stuff like that. It just got to the point where it was like, you hold the button and do a strong grapple, or you tap it and do a light grapple.”

Giles added that the timing based inputs and different button combinations sometimes made it difficult to even understand what action the game was registering.

“And it’s like, how do I know if I’m doing a hard or a soft grapple? How long do I hold the button for? It got to the point where I was like, this isn’t as fun as arcade-style wrestling or arcade-style fighting games. That’s my sweet spot.”

Styles also pointed out that the growing number of controls can become a barrier for players who are not already dedicated fans of the genre. In his view, the time required to truly learn modern wrestling games can discourage newcomers from even trying.

“The more buttons you introduce, the harder a game is going to be to learn. If you’re not a fan, you’re not going to be willing to spend that time in the lab getting better and taking hours to learn it. The new 2K games are too much for me. I don’t want to spend all that time. I did a tournament where a guy was going to wrestle me in a 2K game for a million dollars. I was like, ‘Guys, I don’t know how to play the game. I don’t know how to play the game.’ So he just murdered me because I didn’t know what I was doing.”

Chris Jericho Set To Play Villain On CBS Drama Tracker This Sunday

Chris Jericho may not have a confirmed return date for the wrestling ring just yet, but fans will still be able to see him on television this weekend in a different role.

The longtime wrestling star revealed that he will appear as a villain on the March 22 episode of the CBS drama Tracker. The episode is scheduled to air Sunday night from 9 to 10 p.m. Eastern time.

Jericho shared the news on social media, highlighting his role in the upcoming episode and expressing excitement about the opportunity.

“Stoked to announce I’ll be playing the lead bad guy on this Sunday’s episode of @trackercbs, the NUMBER ONE SHOW on network tv!!!,” Jericho posted. “The episode is called #Breakaway also starring @justinhartley, @fionarene, @davidpaulramsey & @durance.erica and was directed by @davidmbarrett395!

“I play #VirgilDean and let’s just say, he’s not a nice guy. Can’t wait for you all to see it, THIS SUNDAY at 9pm EST on @cbstv & @paramountplus!”

Jericho’s character, Virgil Dean, is portrayed as a stuntman who has turned to a life of crime. The official synopsis for the episode teases a mystery set against the backdrop of the film industry.

After Baxter, a veteran stuntman, vanishes following a risky stunt, his girlfriend Laura turns to Colter for help. The investigation leads them onto the set of a B movie production, where questionable producers and suspicious activity begin to surface. As the case unfolds, Colter discovers a deeper trail that leads into a dangerous underground world.

Jericho has been absent from professional wrestling since April 2025. Earlier this year, speculation circulated that he might return to WWE once his AEW deal expired. However, Jericho remains listed on the AEW roster, and reports have indicated that his contract may currently be frozen.

Outside of wrestling, Jericho has continued to explore opportunities in film and television. In February, he shared that he had filmed four separate acting projects that were awaiting release and expressed interest in continuing to pursue more roles on screen.

Paul Heyman Celebrates 25 Years Since WWE Debut

Paul Heyman Celebrates 25 Years Since WWE Debut

Paul Heyman recently reflected on a milestone moment in his career as March marks 25 years since his debut in WWE.

Heyman first appeared on WWE programming during the March 5, 2001 episode of Raw, stepping into the commentary booth alongside Jim Ross after Jerry “The King” Lawler departed the company. Over the weekend, Heyman reacted to a clip of that moment circulating on social media and, true to form, took the opportunity to praise his own commentary skills while sharing a humorous memory involving Stephanie McMahon.

“This one popped me huge. Three things to notice. (1) Man, I am not only cute, I’m the best damn commentator that has ever sat at the desk,” Heyman wrote. “(2) @JRsBBQ says ‘I don’t know what I did to deserve this.’ Yes you do. YES YOU DO! And it started with #WCWNewYork

“(3) First people I commented on? @TripleH and @StephMcMahon. Funny note – Steph HATED me [calling] her the Billion Dollar Princess. Absolutely despised the monicker. But rest assured, she got even with me for it!”

Heyman’s time on commentary would not last forever, as he eventually transitioned back into the managerial role that made him one of the most influential figures in wrestling. Across multiple runs in WWE, he has aligned himself with several top stars, most notably Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns, helping guide them through some of their most dominant stretches.

Today, Heyman remains an on screen presence while also contributing behind the scenes. He currently manages The Vision, a faction made up of Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, Logan Paul, and Austin Theory.

In 2024, Heyman received one of the highest honors in the industry when he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in Philadelphia. The city carries deep personal significance for Heyman, as it served as the home base and birthplace of Extreme Championship Wrestling.

WWE NXT Talent Hit With Major Travel Delays Ahead Of Houston Show

WWE NXT Talent Hit With Major Travel Delays Ahead Of Houston Show

Travel issues are creating uncertainty for several members of the WWE NXT roster as they attempt to make their way to Houston, Texas for this week’s episode of NXT.

With the brand continuing its build toward Stand & Deliver, NXT is scheduled to broadcast live from 713 Music Hall in Houston this Tuesday night. However, plans have been disrupted due to flight delays affecting talent attempting to depart from Orlando.

Bryan Alvarez reported that the situation developed at Orlando International Airport, where a ground stoppage has significantly impacted flights leaving the area.

“NXT talent apparently stuck at the Orlando airport which is currently at a ground stoppage with flights delayed so far above four hours,” Alvarez wrote. “NXT is in Houston tomorrow and WWE is monitoring the situation in case they can’t get out of Orlando.”

Severe weather appears to be the main factor behind the delays. Thunderstorms throughout the Orlando region have caused multiple flight disruptions, including extended delays and cancellations, leaving WWE officials monitoring whether the roster will be able to depart in time for the live broadcast.

Despite the travel issues, this week’s NXT remains a key stop on the road to Stand & Deliver 2026, which is set to take place in St. Louis on April 4. After Tuesday’s show, only three more episodes of NXT remain before the annual premium live event.

The current lineup announced for Tuesday’s show includes:

• Booker T Appreciation Night

• Triple Threat Match: NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne vs. Sol Ruca vs. Zaria

• Steel Cage Match: Women’s North American Champion Tatum Paxley vs. Izzi Dame

• NXT Tag Team Championship No. 1 Contender Tournament: Hank & Tank vs. Birthright

• Women’s WWE Speed Championship Match: Fallon Henley vs. Wren Sinclair

• Vanity Project vs. Los Americanos

With travel delays continuing to develop, WWE will be keeping a close eye on the situation as the NXT roster attempts to make it to Houston in time for the live show.

Eddie Guerrero’s Daughter Sherilyn Guerrero Shares Update On Her Wrestling Debut Timeline

Eddie Guerrero’s Daughter Sherilyn Guerrero Shares Update On Her Wrestling Debut Timeline

Sherilyn Guerrero, the daughter of late wrestling icon Eddie Guerrero, is preparing to step into the ring for the first time as she continues her training with Booker T.

Speaking with The Magic of Wrestling, Guerrero shared that she began her wrestling training in October and has been working hard toward making her debut. However, her progress briefly slowed after she suffered an ankle sprain in December. Despite the setback, she has returned to training and says the experience helped her refocus on her goals.

“I started training in around October, actually, and it was really cool. I got an ankle sprain in December so I had to sit out for a bit and then just start it back,” she said. “Something about recovery helps you kind of recalibrate your intention and things with this. And oh man, training is just different now. Coming back into it and the coaches I have, they’re so great in the ring and out the ring.”

Guerrero praised the supportive environment she has found while training, noting that the coaching staff have created a place where students feel comfortable learning and improving.

“I hope that they all get that light they deserve because Booker has some really great people teaching their students and I’m so lucky. It absolutely is one of the greatest. Yeah, they have great people there. The coaches are great, they pour into their students in and out the ring. I don’t think anyone is scared to go to their coaches, everyone feels comfortable asking questions and trying things again because the coaches make it comfortable. And that’s so important.”

While a specific date has not been set, Guerrero indicated that she expects her first match to happen before the end of the year.

“Who knows? Definitely a debut this year for something,” she responded when asked about the timeline for her debut.

Guerrero is currently training at Reality of Wrestling, the Texas based school run by Booker T that is affiliated with WWE’s developmental initiatives. The promotion has helped develop several rising stars, including current WWE Raw standout Roxanne Perez.

Outside of the ring, Guerrero has also launched her own YouTube channel where she shares vlogs and interviews. One recent video featured a conversation with Mick Foley as he reflected on his memories of her father Eddie Guerrero.

If all goes according to plan, Sherilyn Guerrero’s long awaited debut could arrive before the end of 2026, marking the start of a new chapter for the Guerrero wrestling legacy.
