Trick Williams doesn’t sound eager to continue the WWE United States Championship open challenge tradition now that the title is around his waist.
Williams won the championship at WrestleMania 42 by defeating Sami Zayn, ending the run of a champion who had revived the U.S. Open Challenge in 2025 with John Cena’s blessing. That format led to Ilja Dragunov, Carmelo Hayes, and Zayn himself all capturing the title through open challenge matches.
Speaking to ESPN after WrestleMania 42 Sunday, Trick made it clear he has no intention of giving away weekly title shots.
“Trick Williams, I’m a superstar and I wear that very seriously,” he said. “I don’t know about these free matches every single Friday night. When the people see Trick Williams, it’s going to be in a main event. It’s going to be a show when I defend the title.”
Williams’ comments signal a shift away from the open‑door policy that defined the championship for the past year. Instead, he appears focused on presenting himself — and the title — as marquee attractions rather than weekly opportunities.
With his first reign just beginning, the direction of the U.S. Championship now rests entirely in Trick’s hands, and he seems determined to elevate it on his own terms.
