Trick Williams on the Turning Point Elevating Him to His Current Position – Trick Williams recently spoke with Adrian Hernandez to promote WWE NXT Battleground 2024, where he is slated to defend the NXT Title against Ethan Page.
Williams spoke about the influence of CM Punk on the NXT roster when he attends NXT TV events and advises the younger stars. Unlike the reputation he has with some people from his time in AEW, Punk has been internally praised since returning to WWE.
Williams said, “Mentor is a perfect way to put it, man. He has been a blessing for all of us who would take the time to actually go talk to him and reach out to him. He’s helped me with a few things that I feel like, if the crowd knew about it, they would be very grateful that he did. I’ll just leave it there. Shoutout to CM Punk. He’s been a positive light for all of us here in NXT.”
Williams was also asked about when the switch went off in his head, helping elevate himself to the position that he’s in today.
“I was just talking about this man. I have to say it’s probably Ilja Dragunov. I believe it was Heatwave. But I remember as he proceeded to kick me in the head over and over and over, and the vision in my left eye got blurry. I said, ‘I am in a fight. And it’s in my best interest to just lay it all on the line and go out fighting regardless of what happens.’ You know, I mean, having that spirit of a fighter, that spirit of a champion, you know, I mean, and did I win the match? No. But I earned everybody’s respect that night. And the reception I got from the audience and night was crazy because they said, you know, shake this fight. Dragunov, of course, he fights. That’s what he does. But it’s literally that simple, man. It’s not about flips and all these other types of stuff, and it’s fine. Get in there and put your heart in the ring. And I think since that moment, I’ve been able to approach this game totally differently.”
