Trick Williams has shone brightly since his move to the main roster, and he credits that success to past black wrestlers and WWE’s management.
Williams has quickly made a mark and is set to have a title match at WrestleMania, just months after being called up to the main roster. He spoke to “HOT 97” about the exciting time he’s in, alongside fellow rising stars like Oba Femi and Carmelo Hayes, and also paid tribute to black wrestlers who paved the way for them.
“First of all, what a time, man. Like I said, some of these things you can’t control. It just, it is the right time. And I got to say, shout out to the guys who came before us who laid down the foundation that made us, you know, be able to shine in this light that we’re doing. You know, the Booker Ts, The Rocks, the Bobby Lashley’s, etc,” he said.
Williams, who has impressed with his work on the mic, credited WWE CCO Triple H and WWE President Nick Khan for giving him the freedom to be himself.
“Also, I got to say, shout out to Triple H, Nick Khan, for giving us the platform every single week. I lie to you not, he says, ‘Go out there and do your thing. He said, nobody can be Trick Williams. We can’t write for you. You go out there and you be Trick Williams,'” said Williams. “It’s not even about the script a lot of times, you know, if we playing football there’s a play and you rehearse it all day long, but the beauty is not in the play. It’s in the execution, and you got to be able to execute and that’s why I do better than anybody else.”
He praised Khan and Triple H for giving young stars like him a chance, which they are now repaying with what they’re doing on screen. Williams will have the biggest night of his career in a few weeks when he will go up against Sami Zayn for the United States title at WrestleMania 42.
