Undisputed WWE Championship Match Set for Royal Rumble – The Undisputed WWE Championship will officially be defended at WWE Royal Rumble, as announced by SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis.
During the January 9 edition of WWE SmackDown, Aldis revealed that a new number one contender will be determined through a multi-step qualification process. The road to the title match will begin on the January 16 episode of WWE SmackDown, where four qualifying matches will take place. Each match will feature two competitors, with the winners advancing to a fatal four-way match.
That fatal four-way bout is scheduled for WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on January 24. The winner of that match will earn the right to challenge for the Undisputed WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble Premium Live Event.
WWE Royal Rumble is set to take place on January 31 in Saudi Arabia, marking another major international event for the company. While the reigning champion was not named during the announcement, the focus was placed on the competitive path designed to determine the challenger.
Eight competitors have been confirmed for the qualifying matches, representing a mix of established main roster stars and recent call-ups. The announced participants are Sami Zayn, Ilja Dragunov, Damian Priest, Solo Sikoa, Matt Cardona, Trick Williams, Randy Orton, and The Miz.
The qualifying matches for the January 16 episode of WWE SmackDown are as follows: Randy Orton will face The Miz, Matt Cardona will take on Trick Williams, Damian Priest will go one-on-one with Solo Sikoa, and Sami Zayn will square off against Ilja Dragunov.
Each matchup carries significant implications, as only four competitors will advance to Saturday Night’s Main Event, and only one will move on to the Royal Rumble title opportunity. With former world champions, dominant powerhouses, and rising stars all involved, the qualification process is set to shape the Undisputed WWE Championship picture heading into one of WWE’s biggest events of the year.
As noted, Drew McIntyre is once again at the very top of WWE after capturing the WWE Undisputed Championship on SmackDown, defeating Cody Rhodes in a brutal Three Stages of Hell match. The highly anticipated main event took place in Berlin, Germany, and delivered a decisive shift in WWE’s championship landscape, with McIntyre ending Rhodes’ reign with help from the shocking return of Jacob Fatu.
