Vince McMahon Viewed Saudi Arabia Agreement As Major Risk Following 2018 Controversy

George Barrios has shed new light on the internal discussions that took place within WWE as the company weighed whether to continue its business relationship with Saudi Arabia following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

WWE’s partnership with Saudi Arabia began that year under a landmark ten year agreement, with the first event, Greatest Royal Rumble, taking place in April. However, plans for a return event later that year were thrown into uncertainty after Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Turkey in October and never emerged. The CIA later concluded that the journalist had been killed on the orders of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

While WWE temporarily halted ticket sales for Crown Jewel amid the growing controversy, the company ultimately proceeded with the event as scheduled.

In his new book, Sometimes Wrong but Never in Doubt: How a Cuban Kid from Queens Transformed WWE, former WWE co-President George Barrios reflected on the tense period and revealed the conversations taking place behind closed doors as the company debated its next move.

“Our negotiations dragged on because the Saudis are notorious hagglers. By 2018, despite having made great progress, we were struggling to get the deal over the finish line. Complicating matters was the disappearance of Saudi journalist and dissident Jamal Khashoggi.

“As outraged as I was by what happened, I still defy anyone to argue they understand who was truly at fault. All I know is that on our end, Khashoggi’s disappearance called into question our deal with the Saudis.

“Vince (McMahon), Michelle (Wilson), and I spent a great deal of time debating the pros and cons of moving forward. Vince in particular was deeply uncomfortable with the uncertainty surrounding the events.

“In my opinion, we couldn’t walk out on the deal. It was too worthwhile for WWE. But Vince kept shaking his head. ‘This thing with Khashoggi. Doing the deal could be the biggest risk we’ve ever taken with the company.’

“‘Vince, listen to me’, I said. ‘I understand how serious this is. But no one really knows what’s going on.’”

Barrios explained that the controversy forced WWE leadership to carefully examine both the reputational and financial implications of continuing with the agreement. According to his account, Vince McMahon expressed significant concerns about the uncertainty surrounding the situation, while company executives weighed whether backing away from the deal was a realistic option.

Michelle Wilson, who served alongside Barrios as WWE co-President, remained part of those discussions. Both executives departed the company in January 2020 but later returned as members of WWE’s board of directors in January 2023.

Barrios is currently one of the defendants in the ongoing WWE shareholder lawsuit, with proceedings set to begin this week in the Delaware Court of Chancery.

WWE’s Sol Ruca Reacts To Wave Of Social Media Feedback Following Main Roster Debut

Following WrestleMania 42, Sol Ruca was called up to WWE’s main roster, and though she quickly captured the Women’s Intercontinental Title, she dealt with immediate online criticism within weeks of being inserted into weekly storylines. Whether it was facing online backlash for botching her finisher, the Sol Snatcher, on multiple occasions, or fans directing their frustration at the creative team for having the Intercontinental Champion lose her first two matches on the main roster, it hasn’t been the easiest path for the young star since leaving “WWE NXT.” Following her title win over Becky Lynch at Clash In Italy, Ruca addressed the commentary about her main roster run so far during an appearance on “WWE Now.”

“I mean, even in ‘NXT’ we get people that are watching every move and we get people that are leaving hate comments and all this negativity and essentially being up on the main roster you have more eyes, which means more hate, but also means more love. So it is something that I’ve had to kind of navigate,” she explained. “But at the end of the day, especially with people on social media, that’s such a small percentage of our fanbase. And as long as the crowd in person is happy and everyone backstage is happy with what I do, then that’s fine with me.”

Now that Ruca’s feud with Lynch is in the rearview mirror, she will shift her attention to former Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria, who laid out her challenge for the title on “WWE Raw” after not being able to compete for it while “The Man” had the gold around her waist.

Mick Foley Explains Why He Walked Away From WWE

Mick Foley has opened up about why he chose to walk away from WWE, revealing that the company’s perceived ties to U.S. President Donald Trump ultimately pushed him to make the decision.

Speaking during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Foley explained that a series of events led him to reconsider his association with WWE, but one particular incident became the tipping point. According to Foley, comments made by Trump regarding the death of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele deeply troubled him and forced him to reflect on where he stood.

Foley compared his decision to a windshield slowly cracking under repeated strikes.

“Well, everyone has to make the decision that feels right to them. I sometimes describe someone’s big break as being more like a series of little breaks, like a ball-peen hammer and a windshield. You don’t know which tap actually causes the crack, but without a multitude of them, that windshield’s not cracking at all. So for me, it was the comments about Rob Reiner. Just heartless, unbelievably cruel comments coming from the most powerful man in the world, finding joy in how somebody died,” Mick Foley said.

He continued by explaining that those remarks were the final factor that convinced him he could no longer remain silent.

“I don’t want to paraphrase, but belittling the man who just died, somehow tying his own death into Reiner’s dislike of Donald Trump. For me, that was the ball-peen hammer tap that broke the windshield. I just think WWE had a very cozy relationship where there was definitely the illusion of a relationship there, the perception rather,” Foley added.

The WWE Hall of Famer also pointed to several public interactions between Trump and WWE personalities over the years, saying that those moments contributed to the perception of a close connection between the two sides.

“I think when five different people are posing in the Oval Office, and they’ve all received Stone Cold Stunners, that’s a little cozy. And Ariel, I felt like even though I wasn’t technically employed by the company, but because I had a legends deal, because my name’s been associated with WWE for over 30 years, that I was complicit in my silence. And so I did speak up,” he said.

Foley noted that ending his Legends agreement came with a financial sacrifice, particularly after turning down opportunities connected to WrestleMania week. However, he said he has no regrets about the choice he made.

“I reached out to the head of talent relations, who I consider a friend, who I still write handwritten letters from Santa to every year, and send the videos out. So basically, I give up the legend’s deal that runs out at the end of this month. I realized that by giving up two really easy, very high-paying jobs at WrestleMania week for WWE that I had to work 24 hours on my own to make what I could have at six. And I’m okay with that. So I’m good with my decision,” Foley continued.

While stressing that he still has affection for WWE and the people within the company, Foley said his decision was ultimately about staying true to his personal beliefs and setting an example for future generations of his family.

“Everyone, I think, has to make a decision that’s right for them, and in my case, I just didn’t want to be in a position where my grandchildren are asking what their grandfather was doing when things were really tough. And I want my children to be able to say, this is what grandpa did. So I made the move that I felt was right for me. I love that company. I’m not going to disparage them. But it didn’t seem like a good fit. Didn’t seem like a fit that would allow me to look at myself in the mirror before I went to bed,” Mick Foley concluded.
