Bully Ray Says Brock Lesnar Never Actually Announced Retirement

Bully Ray believes Brock Lesnar’s surprise return to WWE RAW should not be viewed as a shock, because neither Lesnar nor WWE ever used the word “retirement.” Speaking on the Busted Open podcast, he said the idea that Lesnar had stepped away was based entirely on fan assumption, not anything stated on television.

Ray pointed out that what many interpreted as a retirement moment at WrestleMania 42 was never confirmed by WWE. He explained, “You never heard those words come out of Brock’s mouth. At least I don’t think we did, not on WWE television, not on one of their podcasts. The WWE never touted Brock Lesnar is officially retired. As a matter of fact, they were saying ‘what’s next for Brock Lesnar,’ and I find that a very interesting choice of words post-WrestleMania.”

Lesnar left his boots and MMA gloves in the ring after losing to Oba Femi at WrestleMania 42, hugged Paul Heyman, and walked away in a moment that looked like a farewell. WWE later moved his profile to the alumni section of WWE.com, which added to the speculation. However, PWInsider reported last week that Lesnar is still listed internally as an active performer and considered a free agent.

Ray said those mixed signals made the return feel logical rather than contradictory. He added, “He never said I’m retiring. We just speculated it. The way he took off his boots and gloves, I got why he did it. You could always bait a person in. He got beat. What better way to sucker someone in than to make them believe you have retired?”

Tommy Dreamer noted that WWE’s own storyline hinted at retirement paperwork being filed, with Adam Pearce referencing it backstage. But he agreed the details were vague enough to allow Lesnar to return without breaking continuity.

Ray also suggested what he believes would be the perfect promo for Lesnar to deliver now that he is back. He said, “If the promo is from Brock: I never retired. I never said I was retired. All of you people said I was retired. You all speculated, but I never said it, and unless I say it, it doesn’t mean anything. So now I’m officially saying it. And I will officially retire, if you can defeat me, Oba Femi, at SummerSlam in Minneapolis.”

On WWE RAW, Paul Heyman appeared backstage and presented Adam Pearce with a contract for Clash in Italy already signed by Lesnar, leaving only Oba Femi’s signature to make the match official.

Joe Hendry Says WWE Will Soon Release An Album Of His Original Songs

Former WWE NXT Champion Joe Hendry has proven that he isn’t just a threat in the ring, but also on the microphone. As revealed on “Insight with Chris Van Vliet,” the latter talent has now even led to the upcoming release of a music project.

“I haven’t told anyone anywhere, but I have recorded an album with WWE Music. It’s going to drop this summer,” Hendry said. “We recorded most of that in New York at the WWE Studios. So what I’ve done now is the microphones that we have there, I have basically replicated the setup back home now. I don’t need to fly to New York to do it. I can send stuff in and we can work on it back and forth. That’s one of the things that makes these songs work is because they’re fast and they’re topical. We obviously did the Logan Paul song on TV, but we were able to just get it done that week because we could send files back and forth. But yes, there is an album coming out this summer.”

As of this writing, the number of songs on Hendry’s forthcoming album is unknown.

It is possible, however, that it will feature his new single, titled “Can We Fire Logan Paul?”

Hendry released the music video for his Logan Paul diss track earlier this month, with scenes of him playing the guitar backstage and wearing a cutout of “The Maverick’s” face. In the past, Hendry’s songs, performed live in front of the WWE Universe, have taken aim at other stars, such as former WWE stars Gallus and Grand Slam Champion The Miz.

Jim Ross On Kevin Nash Backing Wrestlers’ Union: ‘He Knows What He’s Talking About’

WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash has never been shy about sharing his opinion, but he recently gained a lot of attention for one that came about following the WWE release of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, and reports that WWE was asking talents to take pay cuts. Despite his loyalty to long-time friend and WWE chief content officer Triple H, Nash suggested that the wrestlers consider forming a wrestling union, or apply to the Screen Actor’s Guild, in order to receive benefits and prevent similar situations from happening to other talents in the future.

Most in wrestling remain skeptical that a wrestling union will eventually form in wrestling, including former WWE commentator and current AEW announcer Jim Ross. But despite that, Ross declared on the latest “Grilling JR” that there was a lot of merit to what Nash said, and indicated that wrestlers would be wise to listen to his words.

“He’s a very smart guy Conrad,” Ross said. “He’s very bright. He knows what he’s talking about. I tell the story connected to unions that Bill Watts had one time. ‘These guys can’t agree on what to have for lunch, or go to for lunch.’ So it’s hard to get everybody on the same page so to speak, cause the decision makers in that world, heretofore, have been somewhat, oh I don’t know, they have their own agendas.

“And if they get their money, then they’re happy. And they’re not willing to give some of their money back to the union and move on. So I…you can’t hurt yourself by listening to Kevin and his ideas for a union, or any other topic and wrestling. I think if he was more motivated with the product, he’d probably be in charge of somebody’s creative right now. He’s that good.”

John Cena Says In-Ring Retirement Does Not Mean Retiring From WWE

Retirement in pro wrestling has been loosely upheld for decades, with many performers coming out of it for at least one more dance. In the case of 17-time world champion John Cena, he intends to maintain that status, though he hasn’t closed the door on making special, non-physical appearances for the company he’s called home for over two decades, WWE.

“Gosh, I love watching the product,” Cena told “The Takedown on SI.” “As you saw me, I was having a bunch of fun at WrestleMania. Really looking forward to the future and my future role in WWE. Very excited about the John Cena Classic.

“This was the confusing thing about retirement. First of all, I will stay retired. No fall downs. I will not do anything physical, but that doesn’t mean I’m away from WWE. I mean, anyone who knows me knows how passionate I am about not only the sports entertainment business, but WWE as a brand. It was simply a matter of like, well, where do I fit in now? We’re still trying to find out those pieces, but I think we got a clear path.”

Cena’s in-ring retirement kicked off at the December 13 edition of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, where his final match resulted in him tapping out to “The Career Killer” GUNTHER. Now as an ambassador for WWE, he resurfaced to deliver the attendance numbers for night one and night two of WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. More recently, he appeared at Backlash to unveil the John Cena Classic, an annual event where talents from WWE’s main roster will collide with those from “WWE NXT.” The date and location of his next WWE outing has yet to be revealed.

John Cena Explains Intention Behind Eponymous WWE Event

Cena said the “weirdness” of “all applicants qualifying” for the event adds shock value. He said that fans thinking “wins and losses don’t matter” isn’t true. Cena explained while they do of course matter, the John Cena Classic is a one-night exhibition that requires no lead-up.

“I’m just going to personally invite these people into the event and we’re going to have the event, literally a standalone thing,” he explained. “Like I said, we still have some details to work out.”

He said to keep in mind, he was WWE’s last pick, and he was supposed to be fired. Cena explained he was never supposed to reach the heights he did, and it took him awhile to get the snowball rolling.

“But, maybe we make Oba Femi in one night,” Cena said. “Maybe some kid comes on the scene and just wows you. Win, lose, or draw, and you’re like, ‘That dude’s got it.’ Or, ‘That gal’s got it.’ What a great way as a fan to tell corporate, essentially, ‘Put your chips in this direction. Let’s give this person an opportunity.'”

When asked about “corporate,” meaning WWE creative or TKO attempting to fix the votes to get over the talent they want, Cena seemingly answered the question as it pertained to fans.

“If this is going to be a legitimate, recognized championship by the WWE, we gotta come up with a fair way to do the vote,” Cena said. “We’re trying something for the first time, so, who knows. What I want to do is do the damnedest we can to protect against hijacking and sabotage, and we’re going to figure out how to do that.”
