WWE’s Chelsea Green Offers Health Update Following Heart Procedure

The former “longest-reigning, most dangerous, most Canadian,” two-time WWE Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green is in good spirits after undergoing a heart procedure for SVT earlier this week. A few hours after being discharged from the hospital, Green reached out to “Busted Open Radio” to report how she’s feeling post-procedure, and how she’s ready for her eventual comeback to the blue brand at “WWE SmackDown.”

“I’ve got one more day of bed rest and then it’s taking it easy for another week. I’m feeling good. My wounds are healing, and my heart feels heavy, and my breathing is interesting, but we’re on the mend,” the also former AAA World Mixed Tag Team Champion said to Dave LaGreca and Nattie Neidhart before informing them that she’s already called WWE and pitched some ideas for her return. “I already pitched for this week. I can call in!”

She wasn’t kidding. On this week’s episode of “SmackDown,” Green sent a video message to the current Women’s United States Champion Tiffany Stratton, wishing her good luck on her title defense, which she retained successfully, against Kiana James. Although she’s being coy about it, the former champion is hoping to sneak into Stratton’s good graces to land a future title shot and become the company’s first-ever three-time United States Champion.

Brie Bella Comments On Latest WWE Run, Says AEW’s Bryan Danielson Is ‘So Supportive’

WWE Hall of Famer Brie Bella returned to WWE in the Royal Rumble in January, marking her first more full-time return to the company in nearly eight years. At WWE WrestleMania 42, she won the Women’s Tag Team Championships alongside Paige, after her sister, Nikki Bella, was injured. Winning gold has left Bella with a crazier schedule, as she explained on an episode of “The Nikki & Brie Show.” Bella, who is also a mother of two, credited her husband, former AEW World Champion turned AEW commentator Bryan Danielson, for his help.

“It’s been nice because Bryan has been so supportive,” Bella said. “I was kind of like, ‘Bryan, this is what my schedule looks like the next month,’ but he’s been great. It always makes life easier when you have that, and I don’t have to worry. I feel so blessed. So, that’s been great. I feel like just in the next couple weeks, you’re going to really start to feel… Like, it’s just going to be really fun. You gotta tune in.”

WWE has a packed lineup of shows through June, though it’s not clear what Bella was referring to. After WWE Backlash, which Bella and Paige are not booked for, WWE will present Saturday Night’s Main Event in Fort Wayne, Indiana before Clash in Italy on May 31. In June, WWE will travel to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for Night of Champions. Nikki joked that with her “tune in” comment, Bella must know her creative moving forward.

“No, I don’t,” she admitted. “At all, actually. I really don’t. But what I’m saying is you’re going to get a lot of us, which is awesome.”

Jerry Lawler Looks Back On Infamous WWE WrestleMania Match With Michael Cole

Many fans may remember WrestleMania 27 for its main event match, which pitted John Cena against then-WWE Champion The Miz. For Jerry Lawler, it marked his first and only time performing on WWE’s grand stage, with fellow commentator Michael Cole as his opponent.

During an interview with “Notsam Wrestling,” Lawler looked back on his now infamous match, which also involved WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Jack Swagger, and Cole’s bright orange singlet. “We got to work out one time before we went in the ring,” Lawler said, reflecting on his pre-match preparation with Cole. “I busted his lip. I did something and it hurt his arm. It was just his first time, so just everything was hurting him. And I said, “How did that bust your lip?’ He just [said] ‘I don’t think I can do this. I don’t think I can do it.’ I said ‘Believe me, you’ll make it, too.'”

Regarding the match itself, which spanned nearly 14 minutes, Lawler believes it ran far longer than necessary. “We had so much more time than we needed,” he said. “We had two guys that could be put in the match. Stone Cold was the referee, and that was his height of his popularity. They he had [Jack Swagger,] and they did nothing. I’m sitting there and thinking, ‘why aren’t you guys doing something? Please do something.'”

At one point, Lawler’s repeated stomps prompted Swagger to throw in the towel for Cole, whom he had trained in the lead-up to WrestleMania. Austin, the special guest referee, denied the gesture for surrender, however, and nailed Swagger with a stunner. Left to fend for himself, Cole then tapped out to an ankle lock for what should have been a submission victory for Lawler. Instead, the anonymous “WWE Raw” General Manager ruled that due to a mid-match shove from Austin to Cole, Cole ultimately won via disqualification.

TKO Quarterly Earnings Report Shows WWE Growth Despite Falling Ticket Sales

According to this week’s report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE is “ridiculously healthy economically.” The Stamford-based promotion earned $475.7 million in this year’s first quarter revenue, versus the $391.5 million they made in the same quarter last year.

Even though fans have protested over the overwhelming costs of tickets for live televised shows and its premium live events, the live events and hospitality revenue for WWE has also increased in profit as well, going from $76.3 million to $123.5 million. However, WON finds the numbers to be misleading, because it includes $55 million from Saudi Arabia for payment of this year’s Royal Rumble PLE.

Despite what most think, corporate is aware that fans are unhappy with these increased charges. Regarding how officials at TKO (the parent company of WWE and UFC) are handling these complaints by fans on ticket prices, TKO President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Shapiro clarified that they take feedback from its core fans “extremely seriously.” However, he’s unsure what percentage of its fanbase are expressing these concerns. That said, Shapiro mentioned words to the effect that in order for them do proper business, they must split their perspectives in two, by having one foot in the door of the overall fan experience (what he thinks they would like or what will make them come back again), and the other in the sports business door to appease their sponsors.

Shapiro did note that TKO and WWE were very pleased to see that the shows held in Laredo and Lubbock, Texas, earlier this year were sold out, hoping that in time, they’ll see more sold out venues.
