John Cena Says Backlash Announcement Will ‘Shock the Foundation of WWE’

John Cena says his upcoming announcement at WWE Backlash 2026 will “shock the very foundation of WWE.”

Cena officially confirmed earlier this week that he will appear at Backlash in Tampa on Saturday after previously teasing that he had “history-making news” planned for the event.

John Cena Backlash announcement teased

On Thursday, Cena posted a video to social media from outside Benchmark International Arena, the venue hosting Backlash, where he hyped the significance of what he plans to reveal.

“WWE Universe, hey, John Cena here, standing in Thunder Alley, outside of Benchmark International Arena in Tampa Bay.”

Cena then claimed the announcement would affect every level of WWE.

“In just a few days, I have a major announcement inside this building that is gonna shock the very foundation of WWE, from its fans to its superstars, from its champions down to its rookies.”

He continued by thanking Tampa for hosting the event and encouraging fans worldwide to tune in.

“I’m so grateful that Tampa is allowing me a place to make this announcement.”

“Thank you, WWE. See you live on ESPN in the States and Netflix around the world, but don’t miss Backlash. I’m so excited, and I’ll see you there.”

Cena initially hinted at having “something epic” planned for Backlash in a social media post on April 23, even before WWE officially announced him for the premium live event.

The website for Benchmark International Arena later advertised Cena for the show on May 3, and Cena publicly confirmed his appearance the following day.

At this point, WWE has not revealed any details regarding the nature of Cena’s announcement, leading to heavy speculation among fans online.

Backlash is scheduled for Saturday night in Tampa and will feature multiple major matches, including Roman Reigns defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu.

Cena’s appearance is now expected to be one of the biggest talking points of the event regardless of whether he wrestles on the show.

TNA Slammiversary And AEW Forbidden Door Avoid Direct Clash

TNA Slammiversary And AEW Forbidden Door Avoid Direct Clash

TNA Slammiversary 2026 and AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2026 will not directly compete head-to-head despite both pay-per-views taking place on the same day.

Updated listings on Ticketmaster and the Agganis Arena website show that Slammiversary is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, June 28.

TNA Slammiversary and Forbidden Door schedule

Slammiversary will take place at Agganis Arena in Boston.

Meanwhile, Forbidden Door is set for later that evening at SAP Center in San Jose.

The current start time for Forbidden Door is listed as 7 p.m. Eastern and 4 p.m. Pacific, meaning the two shows will not overlap directly.

While the separation in start times helps avoid direct competition between the promotions, Slammiversary will still face significant sports competition that afternoon due to a FIFA World Cup second-round soccer match airing on the same day.

The scheduling situation arrives during a period of growing tension between TNA Wrestling and All Elite Wrestling.

Over the last month, friction between the companies reportedly increased after TNA pulled several talents from independent wrestling events that were also featuring AEW wrestlers.

During a recent interview with Busted Open Radio, TNA President Carlos Silva accused AEW of attempting to directly compete with TNA in several areas.

Silva claimed AEW had aired programming opposite TNA Impact and also alleged the company attempted to block TNA from running certain venues.

The issues reportedly intensified after an episode of AEW Collision was moved to Thursday night earlier this year due to NCAA March Madness scheduling conflicts, placing the show directly against Impact.

Despite the ongoing tension between the two promotions, fans will now at least be able to watch both major wrestling pay-per-views live on June 28 without having to choose between overlapping main cards.

The System Retains Tag Title Against Nic Nemeth & KC Navarro On TNA Impact

The System’s Bear Bronson and Brian Myers are still TNA World Tag Team Champions following a victory over “The Wanted Man” Nic Nemeth and KC Navarro on “Thursday Night iMPACT.”

Two weeks ago, Nemeth pinned Bronson in singles competition after Navarro supplied a distraction to the entire System stable. Tonight, Nemeth and Navarro then officially worked together in an attempt to dethrone them as World Tag Team Champions.

Navarro seemed close to victory when he planted Bronson with a DDT. Seeing his teammate’s predicament, though, Myers prevented Navarro from further capitalizing with a pinfall. Nemeth responded with a superkick that sent Myers flying to the outside and a crossbody that wiped out Eddie Edwards and Cedric Alexander.

Nemeth’s moment of triumph was fleeting as Myers then leveled him with a spear on the floor. Meanwhile, inside the ring, a leg pull from Alisha Edwards shifted Navarro’s attention, allowing Bronson to drop him with Bear Down for The System’s win and successful title retention.

Bronson and Myers captured the World Tag Team Championships at TNA Rebellion by defeating Matt and Jeff Hardy. Tonight’s “iMPACT” broadcast served as the platform for their first title defense.

Following Bronson and Myers’ victory, Eddie Edwards and Cedric Alexander called out X-Division Champion Leon Slater and former System member Moose for another tag bout. In this case, the existing System lost, with Moose picking up the win for his team by pinning Edwards. Next week on “iMPACT,” Slater will defend his respective title against Alexander in a two-out-of-three falls match.

Dakota Kai Says 2025 WWE Release Was ‘More Of A Shock’ Compared To Previous Exit

Kai continued by sharing how she was informed about her release, but was adamant about her gratitude towards the company, explaining that she didn’t think her dream of becoming a WWE star was possible.

“A phone call. Yeah, they usually do it like that and then not long after it will be online and things like that. So I had to like take a step back from social media just cause it is a lot. Losing a job in any sense is rough, but I never ever thought I would make it to WWE anyway. I think for me the whole experience was just like a pleasant surprise and even then coming back in 2022 … I was just very grateful to be there cause I never saw myself in that position at all ever.”

Kai also didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to WWE, saying that she’s not interested in burning bridges with the company but wants to prioritize what is best for her career first. This past March, Kai returned to professional wrestling under the name Charlie, where she’s had matches with Kris Statlander and Shotzi Blackheart on the indie scene.

Bully Ray Lays Out Options For John Cena’s WWE Backlash 2026 Announcement

Given the wording of Cena’s initial statement on the matter, I must agree with “Busted Open Radio’s” Dave LaGreca: Club WWE is coming, with Backlash 2026 marking its official launch. Whether we’ll actually like it, however, depends on the price tag attached to the yearly membership fee.

Per the company, a membership to Club WWE will unlock a number of benefits, including 24-hour ticket presale access to all events, select Superstar meet and greet opportunities, bonus WWE content, and access to exclusive WWE Shop collections. Members-only community forums and a rewards system have also been also highlighted. Even more is expected to be revealed, and considering Cena’s status as the commercial face of Club WWE, it seems fitting that he’d make the break down its full details at a premium live event like Backlash.

With that being said, I wouldn’t describe the kick-off of Club WWE as “history-making” or something that would “shock the very foundation of WWE.” Yes, it could be a cool “experience” for both WWE stars and fans, but could it really shake the landscape that much? I don’t think so.

That’s why I hope we’re wrong and Cena’s announcement is something entirely different. A physical Hall of Fame isn’t a bad idea. That’s an attraction that many would legitimately pay to see and immerse themselves in. Club WWE, on the other hand, would be an underwhelming result from such big hype.
