Backstage News on John Cena’s WWE Backlash Appearance

Backstage News on John Cena’s WWE Backlash Appearance

John Cena is set to appear at WWE Backlash on May 9, and new backstage details clarify why he is scheduled for the event.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Cena’s presence at Backlash is tied directly to his current WWE contract, which includes a set number of appearances.

John Cena Backlash Role Still Unclear

Meltzer confirmed that Cena is booked for the show but noted that his exact role has not been finalized.

“The situation there is that he’s on Backlash. I’m not sure what the role will be because he said he’s never gonna wrestle again. They signed him to a contract that called for a number of appearances, so this is one of those appearances. His deal called for these things,” Meltzer said.

Cena has stated he will not return to in-ring competition, making it likely that his involvement will come in a non-wrestling capacity, possibly announcing some future events.

Contract Obligations Behind Appearance

The report indicates that Cena’s return is not a one-off decision but part of a broader agreement with WWE. His deal includes multiple appearances following WrestleMania 42, and Backlash is one of those scheduled dates.

Meltzer also questioned the timing of the appearance, given how recently Cena was featured at WrestleMania.

“I mean, to me it’s kinda weird because he just did WrestleMania and it was supposed to be something special. And here we are a couple of weeks after WrestleMania and he’s doing it again. So it feels like for a big guest like that coming back so quick and having him again, kinda seems like why would you do it? But I think the mentality is that John Cena is important and getting him on TV is important. He’s signed for a number of dates, so that’s one of them. That’s it,” Meltzer added.

Recent WWE Appearances

Cena last appeared during WrestleMania 42, where he hosted both nights of the event at Allegiant Stadium. Those appearances marked his first WWE television involvement since stepping away from in-ring competition in December.

Backlash will take place at Amalie Arena, with Cena now confirmed to be part of the show in some capacity.

For now, his role remains undefined, but his presence is officially part of WWE’s plans for the event.

AEW & ROH Star Comments On Brodie Lee Jr.’s Match Over WWE WrestleMania Weekend

Though many come near and far to witness the extravaganza of WrestleMania live, many of those travelers also come to witness other grand shows leading up to “The Super Bowl of Professional Wrestling” during those four-day weekends. Per usual, dream-like matches outside of WWE happened across numerous independent promotions, including GCW’s “Joey Janela’s Spring Break X.” On that card was a memorable moment discussed among many in the crowd and watching from home: Brodie Lee Jr. winning his debut match to the host of the event. Long time veteran of the sport, AEW/ROH star Johnny TV, commented on this match, specifically, the skills Lee has already acquired as a 14-year-old prospect.

“Brodie Lee has no right to be that good at 14-years-old,” the former Impact World Champion told AEW commentator Tony Schiavone on his “What Happened When” podcast. “It was quite a sight to see.”

In the match, the son of the late great Mr. Brodie Lee (Jon Huber), paid tribute to his father and his father’s friend/WWE Wyatt Family companion, Bray Wyatt, by connecting a Discus Lariat and Sister Abigail, respectively. Everyone, including TV’s wife and legend in her own right, Taya Valkyrie, agreed that Lee is destined for greatness. Speaking of future star power, the generational remains adamant that he’ll be the one to retire another great generational talent, in the Undisputed WWE Champion and former AEW flagbearer, Cody Rhodes, when that day comes.

Lee Jr. was first introduced to the public eye as Negative One, the second eyes and ears of his father’s led group, The Dark Order. After his father’s passing in 2020, Lee Jr. became the de facto leader of the group, maintaining the open arms policy his father had established of welcoming other lost souled wrestlers who were looking for order and acceptance. He is signed with AEW, and can compete on a regular basis when he turns 18, if he so chooses.

Backstage Update On John Cena’s WWE Schedule Post-Retirement

John Cena may have retired from his in-ring wrestling career last December, but he’s seemingly been around almost as much as he was before his retirement tour began. Not only was Cena on hand for both nights of WrestleMania 42, hosting WWE’s marquee event, but he is also scheduled to appear at WWE Backlash this weekend, where he has teased unveiling a “history making” bit of news.

For many, Cena’s two consecutive appearances on WWE PLEs is confusing given Cena’s busy schedule and the belief he would be less involved with the promotion after retirement. But as Dave Meltzer explained during Monday’s edition of “Wrestling Observer Radio,” Cena’s appearance at WrestleMania, Backlash, and any other future events is all by design, and part of a new agreement Cena and WWE reached right after Cena’s final match.

“They signed him to a contract, which called for a number of appearances,” Meltzer said. “So this is one of those appearances. It was not like…his deal called for these things. So…to me, it’s kind of weird because it’s like, he just did WrestleMania. It was supposed to be special. And here we are, a couple of weeks after WrestleMania, and he’s doing it again.

“So it feels like you’re kind of, for like a big guest like that, coming back so quick and having him again, it kind of seems like ‘Why would you do it?’ almost. But I think the mentality is that John Cena is important, and getting him on TV is important, and he’s signed for a number of dates, so…that’s one of them. That’s it.”

Nick LoPiccolo Responds To Personal Attacks Following AEW Comments

Nick LoPiccolo is firing back after becoming the subject of personal attacks online, making it clear he is not going to stay silent while critics attempt to undermine him.

The backlash began after LoPiccolo shared a series of strong opinions about AEW, which quickly drew attention across social media. Instead of simply debating his viewpoints, some users shifted focus and began making claims about his behavior, suggesting he was under the influence based on his delivery and tone. Addressing the situation head on during an appearance on BodySlam.net’s podcast with Famous Davis, LoPiccolo dismissed those accusations outright and made it clear they have no basis in reality.

“People are like, ‘Oh, he’s on coke, he’s on coke.’ I’m like, no… I don’t do coke. I don’t do drugs. I don’t drink. I don’t do any of that s**. I just have a lot of energy. I talk fast. I get fired up. I’m passionate about what I’m saying. That’s just how I am. I’ve always been like that.”

He went on to question how strangers online feel confident making assumptions about his personal life without any real knowledge or connection to him.

“Okay, so how do people know about cocaine? Or about like… my family life? How people know about any of this? They all make it up.”

As the conversation continued, LoPiccolo addressed the broader issue, pointing out that criticism of his AEW opinions has turned into attempts to discredit him personally rather than engage with what he is actually saying. He suggested that this kind of response often comes from people looking to shut down discussion rather than participate in it.

At the same time, he did not shy away from acknowledging his past, explaining that while he has lived a full life with different experiences, those moments are being twisted into something they are not.

“Fine. But like, okay, fine. Like, I’ve done everything… I played football, I ran track in college. I did steroids… I remember, like, one time I did mushrooms and ketamine and weed and coke in the same night in college… it doesn’t matter.”

For LoPiccolo, the frustration comes from seeing conversations shift away from wrestling discussion into personal attacks. He emphasized that the focus should be on the points he is making, not assumptions about his character or lifestyle.

“…if you weaponize it and say okay, this person’s an addict… you’re not… you’re not like in real life either.”
