WWE SmackDown Ratings & Viewership Report: 3/27/2026

As WWE heads toward WrestleMania 42, the hype train is picking up steam, with last week’s “WWE SmackDown” delivering another action-packed show that continued the brand’s main storyline — Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton. But how did the blue brand perform in viewership and ratings for the March 27 edition?

It was a mixed bag in terms of viewership and ratings, as the average overall viewership dipped when compared to the previous week, but the key demographic ratings saw a gain. Viewership dropped from 1.43 million for the March 20 edition to 1.30 million for last week’s show, according to “Programming Insider.” This is a 9 percent decline, while it’s also 4 percent less than the four-week average, as per “Wrestlenomics.” Over the last few weeks, viewership for “SmackDown” has yo-yoed between the 1.2 and 1.4 million mark.

The 18-49 key demographic ratings for  “SmackDown” grew by a slight margin as it grew from 0.32 to 0.33, which is 0.2 above the four-week average. The show was fourth in the key demographic ratings on cable, a table dominated by the NCAA Basketball competition.

Last week’s show saw Orton continue to torment Matt Cardona, whom he faced in the main event and defeated, before Rhodes came to the aid of Cardona. The show also saw The Bellas defeat former women’s tag team champions Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss, Rhea Ripley and Jade Cargill continue their rivalry ahead of their WrestleMania match, as well as Jelly Roll win in his very first singles match against Kit Wilson. There was also a title change as Sami Zayn became the WWE United States Champion for the second time in his career after he defeated Carmelo Hayes.

Major Update On Dani Luna’s TNA Status

English wrestler Dani Luna has reportedly asked for her release from TNA Wrestling and has been granted it by the promotion.

Luna, who joined the promotion in 2023, sought her release over the weekend, which the company granted, making her a free agent, as per “Fightful Select.” The report further added that Luna and TNA have a good relationship and that both sides parted on good terms.

The 27-year-old star joined TNA a year after her release from WWE, having been a part of the TKO-owned promotion from 2019 to 2022 as part of the “NXT UK” show. In her time with TNA, Luna won the TNA Knockouts World Tag Team titles on two occasions, both alongside Jody Threat, and both title reigns came in 2024. After Luna and Threat had to part ways after they lost a tag team title match, Luna has competed as a singles star and recently even had a shot at the Knockouts title when she and Lei Ying Lee faced against champion Arianna Grace, who retained her title at TNA Sacrifice last month.

Luna, who missed TNA’s AMC debut earlier in the year due to visa issues, has competed in indie promotions in Europe and the UK over the last few months, aside from wrestling in TNA.

AEW’s Chris Jericho Says Constant Character Reinvention Was Inspired By David Bowie

If you were presented an opportunity to sit under the learning tree of “Le Champion” Chris Jericho, then drink it in, man. If not, you might just make the Painmaker’s list, and find yourself on the receiving end of the Walls of Jericho. Evolving is all part of the process if one wants to maintain popularity in an ever-growing industry like pro wrestling. For Jericho, evolution is key. Emulating this process to match one of his personal heroes in former six-time Grammy winner David Bowie, the future hall of famer describes the importance of learning how to balance familiarity that fans already know, while introducing newer layers that entice fans unfamiliar with his past work.

“I’m a huge Bowie fan, and he was never the same guy twice,” the former and inaugural AEW World Champion said in an interview with GamesHub. “Every record was different in imagery and sound. At the core it was still Bowie, but you could go to a Halloween party and see ten people dressed as Bowie from different eras and recognize every single one of them. I think you could do the same with Chris Jericho…The main thing for me is I never want to be a nostalgia act. I want to keep changing, keep doing things that make people angry at first.”

He may not have won a Grammy like Bowie has yet, but his growth in the wrestling business has awarded him 36 different championships across the board from ECW, WCW, New Japan, WWE, AEW, and ROH, which was the last company he held its world championship in before his absence. Reports remain that “Le Champion” is still “firmly” under contract with AEW, despite entertaining the idea of returning to WWE.

Vince McMahon Reportedly Returning To WWE Amid WrestleMania Concerns

A familiar pattern has often followed periods of cooling interest in WWE. When momentum dips, when ticket sales soften, or when fan engagement begins to feel less electric, history shows that a shake up is never far behind. And more often than not, that shake up has involved one name stepping back into the spotlight, Vince McMahon.

Across multiple eras, McMahon’s presence has coincided with major creative pivots. Whether it was the bold risks of the Attitude Era, sudden character overhauls, or headline grabbing storyline twists, his fingerprints have traditionally appeared when WWE needed to recapture attention. In those moments, the philosophy was simple. Go bigger, go louder, and make it impossible for fans to look away.

Now, similar questions are beginning to surface again, with a number of top insider sources reporting that Vince McMahon is returning WWE as soon as WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas.

Sources are reporting, there has been growing chatter around WrestleMania 42 and its overall momentum, as well as other business concerns. While still positioned as WWE’s flagship event, signs of slower ticket movement and increasing fan concern over the rising costs tied to attending major shows have sparked an internal debate. From travel expenses to premium pricing on experiences, the spectacle remains grand, but accessibility has become a talking point in a way it has not been in years.

That shift has not gone unnoticed.

Within industry circles, there is speculation that TKO Group Holdings is considering a dramatic move to reinvigorate interest heading into WrestleMania season. At the center of that speculation is the potential return of Vince McMahon in a big way, with the idea being that the architect of WrestleMania itself could once again be positioned as a key figure tied to its presentation and business handling.

McMahon’s return has been in the works for a number of months, with many of his legal issues now largely under control. Talks are said to include a potential executive role alongside Paul Triple H Levesque, aimed at helping guide WWE forward and refocus on its core identity. Stephanie McMahon’s recent on screen return is also said to signal the beginning of this transition, with her expected to take on a senior level position within WWE/TKO.

There is a growing feeling internally that recent changes may have drifted too far from what made the product successful, prompting a push to course correct. The belief is that having Vince and Stephanie alongside Levesque would bring experienced leadership and a more balanced direction moving forward.

With WrestleMania 43 expected to take place in Saudi Arabia, there are internal concerns about handling the scale and complexities of such a major international event. The feeling is that experienced leadership, potentially under Vince McMahon, and a steady guiding hand will be crucial during this period.

Number One Contender’s Match Ends in Controversy on NXT

Number One Contender’s Match Ends in Controversy on NXT

The number one contender for the NXT Women’s Championship at Stand & Deliver remains unclear following a chaotic and controversial ending to the March 31 episode of WWE NXT.

The main event featured Kendal Grey taking on Lola Vice in a match designed to determine who would challenge Jacy Jayne for the title. The closing moments created confusion both in the ring and among viewers.

At first, it appeared that Grey had secured the win after delivering a northern lights suplex while caught in a guillotine submission. Her music played, suggesting victory, but the situation quickly unraveled. A second referee entered the ring and confronted the official who counted the pinfall. A replay then showed Grey tapping out during the sequence, indicating that Vice may have actually won the match.

The conflicting outcomes left the match result unresolved. As the situation escalated, Shawn Michaels came to the ring in an attempt to clarify what had happened. Despite his involvement, no final decision was announced before the broadcast ended, leaving the title picture heading into Stand & Deliver uncertain.

The number one contender’s match was set up the previous week after Grey teamed with Wren Sinclair to defeat Fatal Influence. Following that win, Grey declared her intention to challenge Jayne, only for Vice to interrupt and stake her own claim to the opportunity.

With no official winner confirmed, it remains to be seen whether WWE will declare a single challenger or potentially add both competitors to the match at Stand & Deliver.

Elsewhere on the card, additional championship bouts have been confirmed for the event in St. Louis. Vanity Project is set to defend the NXT Tag Team Titles against Los Americanos. In another title match, Tatum Paxley will defend the NXT Women’s North American Championship against Blake Monroe.

The unresolved ending has added uncertainty to one of the key matches on the Stand & Deliver card, with a final decision expected in the coming days.
