Following the successful blueprint laid out by Pat McAfee, another ESPN heavyweight might soon be stepping into the squared circle. Recent reports suggest that Stephen A. Smith WWE debut is becoming increasingly likely, with internal discussions already heating up. While McAfee transitioned seamlessly into a commentary and occasional wrestling role, Smith has expressed a specific interest in becoming a legendary “heel” manager.
WWE Management Ready for Smith
According to WrestleVotes Radio, the enthusiasm for Smith’s involvement isn’t just one-sided. WWE officials are reportedly “pleased and enthusiastic” about the prospect. Thanks to his established rapport with TKO executives and WWE President Nick Khan, the groundwork for a partnership is already laid. Sources indicate that a creative payoff for his involvement has already been pitched, with a potential appearance slated for as early as this summer.
Challenging Paul Heyman’s Legacy
The rumors gained further traction during a recent episode of First Take, where WWE COO Paul “Triple H” Levesque openly discussed a managerial role with Smith. Never one for modesty, Smith set his sights on the very top of the industry: Paul Heyman.
“Someone has to take him down,” Smith remarked, praising Heyman as the greatest manager of all time while simultaneously positioning himself as the one to usurp that throne. When asked who he would want to lead to the ring, Smith didn’t hesitate to name Heyman’s former “Tribal Chief,” the World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns.
With the creative wheels turning and Triple H’s public endorsement, it seems to be a matter of when, not if, we see the outspoken broadcaster trade the ESPN desk for the WWE entrance ramp.
