The John Cena Classic remains a developing concept within WWE, with new information indicating that key details have yet to be finalized following its announcement at Backlash.
According to WrestleVotes, there is currently no confirmed date or venue for the event. Sources spoken to in the days after the reveal noted that logistics are still being worked out, with one internal suggestion pointing to early December as the most logical timeframe. That window would align with the one-year anniversary of John Cena’s retirement match against GUNTHER at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025.
There has also been early external interest in the project. Netflix is reportedly keen on hosting the event on its platform, although no agreement has been finalized at this stage. Overall, very little about the structure of the show has been locked in, reinforcing the idea that WWE is still shaping the concept.
This update matches previous reporting from Dave Meltzer, who described the John Cena Classic as a work in progress. WWE reportedly moved forward with announcing the event at Backlash before deciding on key elements such as format and presentation.
Cena introduced the concept as a unique single-night event that would feature main roster stars facing off against NXT talent. The most notable twist is that the winner of the John Cena Classic would not be determined solely by match results, but by a fan vote.
“You, the audience, the fan, will vote to crown the champion of the John Cena Classic. Every participant qualifies, which also means for the first time in history, a superstar might not win their match, but their hustle could earn your respect, win your heart, win your vote, and you can still crown them the John Cena Classic Champion.”
That concept has led to mixed reactions and questions about how the event will function. It remains unclear whether the show will follow a tournament format with advancement based on votes, or if it will instead be presented as a single stacked card with all participants eligible in the final vote. There are also unanswered questions about how voting will be handled, including whether it will be open to all fans or tied to the Club WWE membership program that was announced alongside the concept.
Cena addressed the early skepticism directly on social media.
“The John Cena Classic may not be perfect by any means, yet it’s authentically me (I am not perfect either) and reflects my values and beliefs. I’m aware that there is the risk it might be a total failure, and I’m not afraid of that and believe it’s still worth stepping ‘in the arena.’”
In terms of potential participants, Bayley has already reacted publicly to a reported pitch involving a match against NXT Women’s North American Champion Tatum Paxley. However, the full lineup and qualification process have not been revealed.
For now, the John Cena Classic remains an evolving project, with WWE continuing to define what the event will ultimately look like.
