Malakai Black Reportedly In Talks For AEW Return After WWE Exit

Malakai Black could be edging closer to another chapter with AEW following his recent WWE departure, with fresh discussions reportedly underway behind the scenes.

Black was among the names released by WWE on April 24, 2026, just a year after making his return to the company in April 2025. Prior to that run, he had spent several years in AEW between 2021 and 2025, where he became a prominent figure on television.

According to a new report, talks have already started about a possible comeback. Michael Reichlin noted that “a source with direct knowledge of the discussions” claims AEW and Black are currently in communication about a return, suggesting momentum could be building toward a reunion.

The situation has also drawn attention following recent remarks from veteran voices within AEW.

Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross addressed speculation about Black’s standing with the company and whether bridges had been burned during his previous stint.

“No, I do not (believe Black has burned his bridge with AEW). But I think that his chances are running out,” Ross said.

He continued by pointing to concerns that may exist behind the scenes.

“Trust is a big thing. Reliability. Are you reliable? There is I’m sure a small faction of some in the wrestling business that believe he’s missing something. I don’t disagree with that. But he’s not missing his attire, his look, his work ethic. So whatever his downfalls are, they seem to be stimulated from things outside the bell-to-bell. But I like the guy. I’d hire him in a heartbeat.”

Tony Schiavone also shared his reaction on What Happened When, admitting he was caught off guard by WWE’s decision and has not yet spoken with Black since his release.

“I was surprised, really, that they [WWE] released Malakai [Black] because he and I are friends. I haven’t really had a chance to talk to him since that time,” Schiavone said.

Further insight came from Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, where he detailed mixed feelings within AEW during Black’s previous run.

“Black is an interesting case because he was a star in AEW, and was booked far better than in WWE. But he wanted to leave and there were people who were not happy with him as he didn’t lose often and once Paul Levesque was in power after Vince McMahon was gone, he tried to get out of his deal at the time.

Eventually he left. It’s basically a guy who would get over with the fans, but others note that AEW’s morale situation is the best it’s been in years and a guy who it was very clear was waiting to leave the last time may not be what they want, given his heart is clearly somewhere else.”

Meltzer added that AEW has previously navigated a similar scenario with Andrade El Idolo, who ultimately returned to the company despite past tensions. That precedent could play a role in how decision makers approach Black’s situation this time around, especially as both sides weigh whether a fresh start is worth the risk.

Backstage News On Blake Monroe WWE SmackDown Debut

Backstage News On Blake Monroe WWE SmackDown Debut

Blake Monroe is reportedly expected to make her official WWE SmackDown debut by the end of May.

According to PWInsider, the current expectation internally is that Monroe will begin appearing on SmackDown television before the month concludes, although the timetable could still change.

Blake Monroe WWE SmackDown debut

Monroe, whose real name is Mariah May Mead, was officially confirmed as part of the SmackDown roster earlier this month after finishing her run in WWE NXT.

WWE has already aired promotional vignettes teasing her arrival on the blue brand, but she has not yet appeared physically on SmackDown programming.

Before joining WWE’s main roster, Monroe had a notable run in NXT, where she captured the NXT Women’s North American Championship. Her final major feud on the brand ended when she lost the title to Tatum Paxley in a casket match shortly before her call-up.

Monroe built her reputation internationally before signing with WWE. She first gained attention wrestling across the United Kingdom independent scene before moving to Japan to work for World Wonder Ring Stardom. During her time there, she won the Goddesses of Stardom Championship alongside Mina Shirakawa.

She later signed with All Elite Wrestling in 2023 and quickly became one of the promotion’s featured women’s stars. During her AEW run, Monroe won the AEW Women’s World Championship before leaving the company and signing with WWE in June 2025.

Following news of her SmackDown promotion, Mark Henry spoke highly of Monroe’s abilities, praising the range of her in-ring style and saying she has no major weaknesses as a performer.

Henry specifically highlighted Monroe’s versatility, pointing to her ability to combine high-flying offense, technical wrestling, striking, and chain wrestling.

With WWE already airing debut vignettes and internal expectations reportedly targeting a May arrival, Monroe’s first official SmackDown appearance appears to be approaching soon.

Aleister Black Reportedly in Talks for AEW Return

Aleister Black Reportedly in Talks for AEW Return

Aleister Black could reportedly be heading back to All Elite Wrestling following his recent WWE departure.

Black was among the wrestlers released as part of WWE’s post-WrestleMania 42 roster cuts announced on April 24, 2026. His release came roughly one year after he returned to WWE in April 2025 following a previous run in AEW that lasted from 2021 through 2025.

According to a new report from SEScoops.com’s Michael Reichlin, “a source with direct knowledge of the discussions” claims that Black and AEW are currently in talks regarding a possible return to the company.

Aleister Black AEW return talks

The report comes shortly after public comments from Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone discussing Black and his standing within AEW.

Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Ross said he does not believe Black damaged his relationship with AEW despite previous reports of backstage issues during his earlier run.

“No, I do not (believe Black has burned his bridge with AEW). But I think that his chances are running out,” Ross said.

Ross’ comments reflected both support for Black’s talent and lingering concerns some within wrestling may still have about issues outside the ring.

Schiavone also addressed Black’s WWE release during an episode of the What Happened When podcast.

“I was surprised, really, that they [WWE] released Malakai [Black] because he and I are friends. I haven’t really had a chance to talk to him since that time,” Schiavone said.

Black originally joined AEW in 2021 shortly after his first WWE release and quickly became a featured part of the company through the House of Black faction. During that run, he worked alongside Brody King, Buddy Matthews, and Julia Hart, becoming one of AEW’s darker and more visually distinctive acts.

His return to WWE in 2025 was viewed as a significant signing at the time, particularly because WWE had reportedly made a strong effort to bring him back from AEW. However, his second stint with the company lasted just over a year before the latest round of roster cuts.

At this stage, no deal has been officially confirmed, but the report indicates discussions between Black and AEW are ongoing.
