Sami Zayn says he does not believe his WWE character has fully turned heel despite recent fan reactions and storyline developments on WWE SmackDown.
During an interview with The Toronto Sun, Zayn discussed the evolving direction of his current character and explained that he intentionally wanted to create something more layered and less straightforward than a traditional heel turn.
Sami Zayn heel turn comments
Zayn directly pushed back on the idea that he has completely embraced a villain role.
“I’ll disagree with your statement that I’ve fully turned heel here. I don’t think I have. I think I’m trying to play this one a little different because this one is kind of different. We’re kind of riding these reactions which are kind of different week to week.”
He explained that the current direction was designed to blur the lines between babyface and heel reactions.
“I had this idea for a slight character shift that would be a little outside the box, that would split the audience a little bit, but sometimes things just don’t work out exactly how you envision it. Sometimes you think you’re going to be somewhere on the timeline and you’re not.”
Zayn added that the story still has several possible directions moving forward and that he enjoys the unpredictable nature of audience reactions.
“I still think there’s a ways to go and it could still go in a number of different ways, which I find very interesting and refreshing.”
He also acknowledged that some of his recent actions were naturally going to upset viewers, specifically referencing his attack on the Gingerbread Man character during SmackDown.
“Although to be fair, if you kick a mannequin gingerbread man below the belt, I know that might upset some people because people want to have fun.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Zayn discussed Trick Williams and suggested he also exists somewhere between a traditional hero and villain despite receiving strong crowd reactions.
“I don’t think Trick Williams is a full-blown (babyface), even though he’s getting really great reactions, I don’t know if I would call him a full-blown good guy or babyface or whatever.”
Zayn later spoke about his recent SmackDown promos involving his loyal supporters and why he enjoys creating a more divided audience response.
“I think this kind of polarizing thing and talking about my fans, like the ride or die fans that haven’t turned their back on me or whatever, that kind of stuff, I just think there’s something fun there.”
He concluded by emphasizing that he still does not view the current version of his character as fully embracing the darker side.
“But I don’t think I’ve fully committed or fully embraced the dark side as you would maybe put it.”
The evolving character work has become one of the more talked-about aspects of Zayn’s current WWE run as fan reactions continue shifting from week to week.
